Rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), TIPP skills are designed to help your body cool down before your mind can catch up. Each step targets your body’s stress response so you can move from crisis to calm:

T – Temperature: Splash cold water on your face, hold an ice pack, or step outside into cool air. This slows your heart rate and triggers your body’s natural calming reflex.
I – Intense Exercise: Do short bursts of movement — jumping jacks, squats, a brisk walk — to release adrenaline and reduce emotional intensity.
P – Paced Breathing: Inhale slowly for 4 seconds, exhale for 6. Deep, controlled breathing signals safety to your nervous system.
P – Paired Muscle Relaxation: Tense, then release different muscle groups while breathing deeply to release tension and restore balance.

When emotions run high, it can feel impossible to think clearly or calm down — that’s when TIPP skills come in.

Today we honor and thank all who have served our country. For your courage, your dedication, and your resilience. At THIRA Health, we also recognize that service doesn’t always end when the uniform comes off. Many veterans face invisible wounds such as anxiety, depression, or trauma that deserve the same care and attention as physical injuries.

Taking care of your mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness. Reaching out for support is an act of courage. This Veterans Day, let’s continue to stand for compassion, connection, and healing.

Mindfulness isn’t just a feeling, it’s a scientifically proven way to change how your brain responds to stress.

Studies using MRI scans show that regular mindfulness practice can reduce activity in the amygdala, the brain’s stress center, and strengthen connections in regions that control focus, emotion, and self-awareness. Over time, this leads to more calm, balance, and resilience.
Even a few minutes a day can make a lasting difference.

We had a wonderful time at the Washington State Psychological Association (WSPA) Fall Convention!

Our team enjoyed connecting with dedicated mental health professionals, sharing resources, and continuing meaningful conversations about evidence-based care and collaborative approaches to healing. A special highlight was meeting the opening speaker, Dr. Sharon Stanley, who brings over 40 years of experience in the mental health field and continues to inspire with her passion and depth of knowledge.

Events like these remind us how vital community, education, and shared purpose are in advancing mental health care across Washington.
Thank you to WSPA for hosting such an inspiring event, and to everyone who stopped by to chat with us!

Did you know?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is built on the biosocial theory which explains that emotional struggles often arise from the interaction between biological factors and life experiences. This can make managing emotions feel overwhelming, but DBT provides the tools to navigate those challenges with balance and skill.

The Story of THIRA

In 1991, Dr. Moore founded The Moore Center (now Eating Recovery Center of Washington), the longest-established treatment center specializing in eating disorder treatment in the Pacific Northwest. In her many years of clinical experience she has worked with patients dealing with a wide variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and substance abuse, among others. These accomplishments are what has lead her to open THIRA Health. THIRA Health’s mission is to help adolescents and women work through traumatic life experiences and learn new coping skills. Soon after opening our doors Dr. Moore brought on Dr. Kathryn Korslund, as our Clinical Director. Having worked under Dr. Marsha Linehan during the development of DBT, Dr. Korslund has brought that expertise to THIRA, and has been a vital force in tailoring THIRA’s IOP and PHP programs following Dr. Linehan’s DBT guidelines. DBT has been proven to be an effective treatment for a wide variety of mental illnesses including but not limited to borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
