In addition to finding the right prescription and magnification for someone with low vision, tints can also be important, mainly because they can help with comfort from glare and improved contrast, and therefore improve their vision.

Dr. Sarah Wolff, a residency-trained low vision optometrist at Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach, explains how tints can benefit low vision patients in their daily lives.
There are many tint options available, each one filtering out certain wavelengths of light. Several of these tints can be used indoors, some can be used outdoors, and some can be used both indoors and outdoors. It really depends on the task at hand, or the area that tends to have a lot of demand for it, and where they require a little more clarity.
Some of the common conditions where patients report a major benefit from tints include the following ocular diseases and conditions:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Retinitis pigmentosa
- Glaucoma
- Migraine sufferers
- Strokes
- Concussions and traumatic brain injuries

Our low vision optometrist can confirm which tint or tints would be best suited to your vision during an eye exam. Call (562) 925-6591 to schedule a low vision exam.

Dr. Eric Ikeda, FCOVD, DPNAP of Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach talks about neurodiverse patients and role of behavioral optometrists in improving their vision.

It is imperative that children see our behavioral optometrist at an early stage if they have cerebral palsy, down syndrome, or have divergent development. This will allow us to determine if there are possible or potential problems that could cause visual difficulties. The goal is to give these children as much opportunity as possible to develop normally. This will enable them to have confidence or be able to use their visual system effectively. It is going to allow them to have an independent life and not struggle.
You can schedule an eye exam with our behavioral optometrist by calling (562) 925-6591.

Dr. Eric Ikeda, FCOVD, DPNAP from Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach provides an overview of how vision therapy can help children misdiagnosed with ADHD. Undiagnosed vision problems impact an estimated 1 out of every 5 children, and often the symptoms that a child struggles with seeing to read are similar to a child with ADHD.

Furthermore children diagnosed with either ADHD or a high functioning spectrum disorder, benefit from vision therapy because they have more confidence in what they're seeing and they are able to utilize the visual system more efficiently.

To learn more about vision therapy or to check and see if an undiagnosed vision problem is the cause of your child's symptoms, schedule an eye exam with our behavioral optometrist by calling at (562) 925-6591.

Dr. Sarah Wolff, a low vision optometrist from Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach, discusses how low vision optometrists and ophthalmologists work together to provide patients with the best possible care.

Optometrists and ophthalmologists often collaborate, focusing on treating patients, and performing similar eye examinations. In a low vision evaluation, the goal is to enhance the patient's vision, create comfortable environments and use devices to achieve the vision that they are hoping to achieve, and then refer the patient back to an ophthalmologist so that their disease can be monitored. The team-oriented approach is extremely beneficial, and it is very helpful to have both.

If you would like to learn more about the differences between optometrists and ophthalmologists or to schedule an eye exam, please call (562) 925-6591.

Amblyopia (also called lazy eye) is a vision disorder in which the eye fails to attain normal visual acuity, regardless of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Eric Ikeda, FCOVD, DPNAP from Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach explains how lazy eye can be treated in adults. It can be treated for patients of all ages, including adults. The treatment of amblyopia in adults definitely poses some more complex challenges. When treating adults suffering from amblyopia, our optometrists are careful to consider the full visual function of the patient. By taking all their functional demands into consideration, our functional optometrists are better able to guide the patient on the best approach for treatment.

It is important to determine the severity of the amblyopia through a thorough evaluation in order to determine the cause of the amblyopia and the prognosis for treatment for adults. It depends on what findings come back from the comprehensive examination or functional examination as to whether we need to consider all the other options.
To schedule a functional vision evaluation, you can call us at (562) 925 6591.

Binocularity (or the ability of our two eyes to work together) is one of the most important visual components that is often overlooked at other eye exams.
Dr. Eric Ikeda, FCOVD, DPNAP from Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach discusses binocular vision and the importance of testing it during an eye exam.

In order to perform daily tasks such as driving, reading, walking, and so on, we rely on our binocular vision. Testing for binocular vision is an essential part of the examination, and in our opinion should be something that is tested at every eye exam. In some cases, the binocular system itself is ignored during an eye exam and the eye doctor is only concerned about whether you can see or if you have any refractive errors that require glasses or contact lenses. As a result it may be difficult to get used to certain glasses or contact lenses because no effort was made to determine whether there was a binocular vision problem.

Our eye doctors get referrals from other optometrists not because they aren't capable themselves, but because they don't do additional tests that our vision therapists or behavioural optometrists do, such as determining how your binocular vision is.
You can schedule an eye exam by calling at (562) 925-6591.
