Massage can be so much more than just, “Ow, I have a tight spot in my shoulders.”
I think getting in touch with your own body/mind is the door that opens you to this much more expansive experience. I also think walking through this door is the key to making the kind of changes you want to see in the world—not just in your own body, but that is where it starts. The truth of your experience is embodied. What you think, feel, need—all of it is encoded in your bodily existence. All of the love and support you’ve ever received is there. So are all the memories of bumps, bruises and breaks along the way.
To dive in further, deep cultural wounding takes place for everyone in industrialized, capitalist societies starting at the earliest ages, and it just never stops. People clip the wings of your identity in order to control your behavior. Much of this wounding is done in conjunction with boundary violations and without the kind of communication and consent that naturally wants to show up when people have your best interest at heart.
Whatever survival strategies have helped you get to where you are today, you are capable of more. You are capable of releasing them with the help of supportive community, including professional therapists like myself who can go beneath the surface. In my work, I love to include somatic support in our sessions so that anytime something profound wants to surface, it can do so in a beneficial way.
Trust me, but don’t just rely on my own words or anyone else’s: You have more going on than you realize. Don’t wait for your shoulders to tell you that you are carrying the weight of the world, when deep down in your bones you already know it.
