As a human who is eating with ADHD, you likely experience some *unique* patterns and habits around food and eating🍴🧠

🌀Even when you do your very best to nourish yourself, you might often find yourself in a pretty sticky ADHD eating spiral.
 
🫠Medicated for ADHD or not, it’s hard to snap out of hyper-focus, hard to hear and understand your special and subtle hunger cues, hard to face the steps on steps on steps it takes to get food from the kitchen to your mouth, and with an undernourished mind and body, your animal instincts can quickly become a barbaric sensation of 😤NEED FOOD, ME HUNGRY… NOW!😤

🧇And thanks to diet culture, there is a steady stream of guilt, shame, and self-judgment that follows all of this. 
 
That my friends, is what the Wise Heart team likes to call the 🌪ADHD Eating Spiral🌪

Affirmations, even statements of compassion or function, can feel hard to believe when we’re in the thick of not being so kind-in-our-mind

🧾We believe creating affirmations based on data and truth are much more approachable and feel more nourishing to us during those times

🫂Instead of trying to believe an affirmation that in the moment doesn’t feel so true, we can go back to the data, to our reality, and see that YES, I am actively working towards and prioritizing healing my relationship with food and body and that YES, I’m doing the best I can to meet myself with gentleness and patience on this journey!

Whether you’re eating with ADHD, or a human being having a tough time prioritizing food and eating, remember that the practice of prioritization takes tiiiiiime to strengthen

🪢It’s easy to get tangled up in the shame spiral of our eating patterns and prioritizing our basic human nourishment needs can feel like an uphill battle

🧠And rightly so! Our brains are wired in a way that makes everything feel important in the moment. It’s hard to see our feeding and eating as times that are valuable and worthy of protection

💪🏼We know that prioritizing ourselves in order to meet our basic needs is a muscle that requires some strength training and that practice, each day, is worth the nourished benefits

✨TRY THIS OUT✨

🍉This week, schedule in just 1 meal a day & practice making that time the most coveted date with yourself. If you end up missing this time, or choosing something else during that time slot, *get curious* and ask yourself what got in the way of prioritizing your wellbeing.

Introducing ✨ the newest member of the Wise Heart Team!

Hi there! My name’s Marcy and I’m so excited to be joining the Wise Heart Family! As the Practice Manager, I will be supporting in all things scheduling, blogging, social media-ing.

I’m a current Graduate Student in Bastyr's MS in Nutrition for Wellness and Health Coaching program. I value the lifelong journey of creating a healthy and loving relationship with food and our body. I use gardening, cooking, and fermenting as tools to deepen these relationships and create more connectedness within myself.

Other ways I stay nourished include travel (host family living in Latin America), gardening, farming, cooking for myself and at a family owned Korean restaurant in Seattle, and getting on stage to sing for jams at open mics around town!

I look forward to connecting with our community here on social media and through our blogs and newsletters - see you there! 💛

🍏 It is a diet culture LIE that food has to be stripped of all emotion and pleasure!

🍏 Food almost always involves emotions - period.

🍏 Whether it's anxiety - which may make the thought of some foods make you feel queasy - excitement to try something new, or comfort from the connection to loved ones and memories.

🍏 All of these are so human. Food, emotional fulfillment, and pleasure are all human needs!

🍏 So here at Wise Heart Nutrition, we welcome the presence of emotions on your plate, and teach you the skills to either embrace or work through those emotions.

There is so much noise on the internet and in the world around us on everything we have to do "right" to be healthy, thin, beautiful, natural - the list is never ending.

Everyone will have a different answer or opinion for you.

So who do you listen to? Yourself !!

You are the expert on your own body and experience - no one knows your body and needs like you do.

And if you spend the time and intention listening to your body, it can give you surprisingly clear answers on what it needs.

If shaming yourself worked as a motivation tool … it would have worked by now. 💕

🧠 But it probably isn’t, right? Guilt and shame are a common tactic, especially for ADHDers, who are often taught that they’re brains are “wrong”.

✨ It may seem counter-intuitive or even uncomfortable, but self-compassion is how we acknowledge and validate our experience, while offering ourselves the grace and space to change.

💚 You will get a lot further in your goal by offering radical compassion to your brain and body than shame could ever take you.

Your body WILL be ok if you take a break from vegetables. I promise. 💛

It doesn't mean that you are unhealthy - it doesn't mean anything about you at all.

Your body is incredibly effective at storing, managing, and sourcing nutrients.

Once you have detached from your unhelpful assumptions about and relationship with vegetables, you may find yourself being attracted to them again, and even craving them!

Taking a break may be just what you need to re-form a neutral relationship with vegetables!
