February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! Here at Bellingham Pediatric Dentistry we are passionate about making sure our patients and families have all the tools and information they need to promote healthy oral habits! Here are a few key things you can do at home to set your child up for success when it comes to dental hygiene:
- Using a fluoride toothpaste once your child has teeth in their mouth, starting with a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. (This amount is safe for children to swallow). Also using a prescription oral fluoride supplement to help their developing adult teeth build strong enamel!
- Helping your child brush their teeth until they have the dexterity to brush on their own(We typically see this stage happening when they are able to fully tie their shoes themselves)
- Trying to limit grazing on snacks in between mealtimes. Snacking over long periods of time increases cavity risk. Snacks such as crackers, chips, dried fruits, can create a breeding ground for cavities! When having snacks that are high in carbohydrates or very sticky, try to limit the amount of time they are eaten over, and follow them with a healthy snack and water to help get them out of the grooves of their teeth if unable to brush right after. Healthy snacks can be things such as nuts, cheese, fruits, or veggies!
-The most important tip of all, establishing your child at a dentist at the age of 1 or after the first tooth is present in the mouth, and getting regular check ups every 6 months! This allows children to begin getting comfortable at the dentist, and also ensures your child’s oral hygiene is properly assessed and monitored for any changes as they grow, and builds healthy oral hygiene habits for their future!

Please note that we are using an aggressive amount of pressure here, on a sign that doesn't have feelings or a gum line. Please don't press this hard on your child's teeth!

We spent the morning doing a kindergarten classroom visit to do some oral hygiene education and talking about what to expect at the dentist! We are passionate about oral hygiene and helping kids feel prepared for the dentist! If you are interested in having us do a classroom visit, please reach out!
