Transition is HARD! BUT it’s usually the fastest stage of labor.
Partners - your job here is VITAL!
You’ll know your partner is in transition when:
-Contractions are long (60-90 seconds) and close together (2-3 minutes apart)
-Your partner is wanting to quit and feels overwhelmed!
-Dilation of 8-10cm
-They might start feeling sick & hot and cold.
Things support people can do during transition:
• Encouragement! Your words matter here. “You can do this. You’re doing amazing. One contraction down, you’re that much closer to meeting baby.”
• All hands on deck with comfort measures that she wants! If physical hands on comfort measures aren’t her cup of tea during this stage, focus on coaching your partner through breathing and relaxing her face/shoulders.
• Think 5 Senses - What things in the environment can you change? Turn down lights, offer sips of water or mints for nausea, offer cold rags, massage/counter pressure, turn down monitors/turn on calm music, smelling peppermint essential oil for nausea or lavender to help feel calm and encourage breathing.
Before you know it transition will be over and you’ll both be that much closer to meeting your baby!
