William "Bill" Catlow

William “Bill” Catlow passed away on Lopez Island on March 11, 2026. He was 77 years old. Born in Bellingham, WA, on September 3, 1948, to William V. Catlow and Cleora Vaughn Catlow, Bill graduated from Bellingham High School in 1966 and began living his life much like the Jimmy Buffett songs he admired so much.

He read dozens of books about heroes and crooks and learned much from both their styles. As the son of a sailor, he worked for Dunlop Towing, where he went out on the sea for adventure. As a dreamer of dreams and a traveling man, he chalked up many miles - from Morocco to Costa Rica, all over Baja, and up to the Arctic Circle - but it was in the San Juan Islands that he called home.

The log home he and his friends built stands as a testament to his style. He shrimped, ate oysters, and drank his share of beer, and he was just fine. He’d known his share of women, but it was Carole Coffelt, whom he married in 2023, who was by his side as he tried to rally but ultimately sprang too many leaks.

Some called him “Bill,” “Unk,” or “Tugboat Bill.” Regardless of the title, he lived his life on his terms. He never had a pencil-thin mustache, “Margaritaville” was wherever he was, and it was always 5 o’clock somewhere (“Cuama-time”). So lift your tin-cup chalice to a perpetual pirate and toast a life well lived.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rena Catlow Browne. Survivors include his wife, Carole Coffelt; his brother-in-law, Ron Browne; his niece, Joanne Browne, and her two sons, Tyler Browne and Nathan Hayes; and his nephew, Scott Browne, and his two children, Logan and Blakely Browne.

Private services will be held later this summer.

Christine Elizabeth Heuser

Christine Elizabeth Heuser, born June 30, 1941, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Robert and Elizabeth Delf, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, in Bellingham, Washington, surrounded by her loving family.

Raised in a Navy family, Christine spent her childhood in California and Guam, learning early how to adapt to frequent moves and new cultures. She later met a dashing Navy man at a Catholic singles dance and married him three months later. Harold Duane Heuser became her partner for more than sixty years, and together they raised four amazing, funny, undeniably good-looking, and humble children.

Christine loved an audience, whether large or small. She sang, danced, told unforgettable stories, and sang lullabies that linger in her children’s memories decades later. One of her happiest memories was performing in Fiddler on the Roof at the Bellingham Theatre Guild. When asked about her favorite adventures, she would often reminisce about living in Spain and trips she took to England and the UAE.

A devoted member of the Catholic Church and an insatiable reader, Christine had an answer for everything. Long before the internet, she was “Google,” only faster, more opinionated, and significantly harder to fact-check.

Her many interests included leading Bible study, restoring and collecting dolls, reading anything and everything, and educating women about childbirth. She was, in every sense, a lifelong teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Delf Jr.

Christine is survived by her beloved husband Duane; her children Mary (Mattias), Paula (Kepler), David (Jill), and Deborah (Beau); and her cherished grandchildren Avery, Connor, and Ella Heuser, Sophia Hyll, and Sean Blakesley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption (2116 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham, WA), with a reception following at Westford's Broadway Hall (1300 Broadway, Bellingham, WA). Christine will be laid to rest at Greenacres Memorial Park during a private graveside committal.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests winning lottery tickets. Christine would expect nothing less.

According to Christine’s wishes, feel free to wear colorful clothing for the funeral.

Joan Elizabeth Ross Henning

Joan Elizabeth Ross Henning passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, surrounded by her children and their spouses. She was 97 years old. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

Joan was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on September 29, 1928. Her parents, Lawrence and Beatrice Ross, gave her the middle name of Elizabeth, after Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain, who was two years older. Some people thought that they looked alike in later years, a comparison that Joan sometimes discouraged in favor of a comparison to French actress Leslie Caron. Both of them, actually, looked a little like Joan.

Her family, including her brother Lawrence Jr., moved from city to city around the Midwest almost annually during her early grade-school years, as her father was a salesman for a major cable and wire company. She adapted well to this peripatetic migration, developing a gregarious personality and an ease with making friends, which served her well throughout her life. The family settled long enough in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, so that she attended Glenbard High School for several consecutive years and graduated in 1946.

She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, majoring in music and specializing in piano, then voice. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and, with three sorority sisters, spent the year 1948-49 studying at the École Normale de Musique and the Sorbonne in Paris. During Christmas break of that year, she and her companions were trapped in the small country of Andorra for two weeks, caught between Spanish regulations on rental automobiles and French avalanches. Intervention by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid liberated them, the publicity around which was Joan’s first brush with fame, as it were.

In 1951, she met Dale A. Henning, whom she would soon marry, while working as a secretary in the Psychology Department at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and earning her teaching credentials. At this time, she was also preparing for a dance part in a summer musical play about Abraham Lincoln, “Forever This Land!” But she left the production shortly after the opening, as she married Dale in July 1952 at her parents’ house in Glen Ellyn. They spent their rather unconventional honeymoon at the Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York, as assistant researchers for a book on the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

They were avid travelers, spending the years 1954-55 in Norway, 1957-58 in Brazil, and 1969-70 in Britain, where Dale taught at business schools. Her son, Craig Randall (Randy), was born in 1956, shortly before their trip to Brazil; her first daughter, Leslie Ann, was born in 1960; and her second daughter, Nancy Lee, was born in 1968, shortly before their stay in London. These children learned how to travel at an early age in order to survive! They lived in Sheridan Heights, north of Seattle, during 1958-1968 and then in Shoreline during 1968-2019.

She and Dale were part of the University of Washington Business School faculty social circle, especially during the 1960s and 1970s, when she served as a member of the UW Faculty Wives Club. She was a Huskies football fan. Whether this was owing to her own enthusiasm or to humor Dale, we are not entirely sure; but it is likely that Midwestern collegiate football culture had rubbed off on her at Northwestern.

Throughout her life, Joan enjoyed singing. Her kids remember her singing in the living room with her 30-something mom friends, while she played the piano, cigarette smoke thick in the air. She sang in several choirs, including the local Shoreline Presbyterian Church choir, Choir of the Sound, Sno-King Chorale, and Kulshan Chorus. She continued to play the piano through her 50s.

Skiing was a large part of the Henning family experience. She and Dale learned how to ski during their stay in Norway, and subsequently conquered Zermatt, Davos, Sun Valley, Aspen, and perhaps 30 other ski resorts in the western United States, Canada, and Europe. A regular on the Innis Arden ladies’ ski bus, she skied until she was in her 80s, breaking her ankle once in the 1960s (at Snoqualmie Pass) and her leg in the 1980s. By the early 2000s, she could ski with her grandchildren during Christmas ski trips to Sun Peaks, British Columbia. Her favorite local ski area was Crystal Mountain.

Beginning in 1964, when she, Dale, Randy, and Leslie spent the summer in Honolulu, Hawaii also became a big part of Joan’s travel experience. Maui became her favorite island, and Napili Bay became the favorite family destination there.

During the 1970s through the 1990s, she worked as a travel agent at Tempo Travel in Lynnwood. As such, she ticketed travel for her family and friends - undoubtedly a major revenue stream for the agency, given the travel proclivity of this demographic - and was pleased to provide good bargains in the process.

Joan and Dale bicycled actively in their 60s and 70s as well, drawing in numerous unwitting friends in the process. She accompanied Dale on a bike trip across the great state of North Dakota in the summer of 1993.

After Dale died in 2019, she lived at Cordata Court in Bellingham for seven years, near Nancy, who oversaw her care and marched her around local parks and marinas to keep her fit. She much enjoyed the camaraderie among the residents there, and the music.

Her favorite film was “The Sound of Music,” and her favorite foreign city was Paris. She liked just about every flower she met, especially geraniums, wisteria, orchids, African violets, plumeria, and rhododendrons. Her favorite ice cream was butter pecan. She liked sitting on the deck of our house in Shoreline with us while watching the sun go down.

People who might be so inclined would be welcome to make a donation, in her memory, to the Kulshan Chorus, a remarkable community-minded organization that inspired her in later years. They can be found at www.kulshanchorus.org.

Joan is survived by her son Randy Henning (Heidi); daughters Leslie Henning (Glenn Lindsley) and Nancy Schmidt (Drew); grandsons Nathaniel and Nick Henning and Casey Schmidt; granddaughter Cassidy Schmidt; and two great-grandsons, Colby and Trevor Schmidt.

Known for her sense of humor and positive spirit, she was loved and will be greatly missed.

Beverly Jean Johnson

, Beverly Jean Johnson received her upgrade into the arms of her Heavenly Father on March 22, 2026, in Bellingham, WA. Bev was born on January 9, 1937, in Bellingham, to David and Margaret (Schwab) Elsasser. Bev was raised on the family farm in Ferndale off Slater Road with her younger brother Marvin. She graduated from Ferndale High School as valedictorian. She then moved to Eugene, Oregon to attend Bible School where she met her soon-to-be husband, Bill Johnson. Bev and Bill would frequently recount that their Bible School teachers told them that their relationship "would never work." Bill and Bev proudly proved them wrong by moving to Bellingham where they married on January 4, 1958, and saved up enough money to build their family home in 1960, where they lived for the remainder of their married life- 65 years! Their firstborn daughter, Sheri, was born in 1958. Their second-born daughter, Tami, was born in 1964.

Bev was a very hard-working woman who had various bookkeeping jobs throughout her life to include working for Bellingham Hardware, DePaul's Jewelry, and Bellingham Travel. In addition to working full time, she found time to have a hot meal on the table every evening for her family, handmade clothes for Sheri and Tami, and pressure-can fruits and vegetables that she grew in her immaculate garden. Their yard also included a magazine-worthy flower garden in the front and back of the house. Bill and Bev spent many, many hours working in their gardens together. This continued to be a passion for Bev throughout her life. In her latter years, her loving caretaker, Liliya, spent hours outside with Bev ensuring all her beautiful flowers were well-kept. Bev loved southern gospel music and she and Bill attended every Southern Gospel concert in the local area as well as traveling to concerts in Branson, Missouri. They were delighted when they got to have lunch with Bill and Gloria Gaither while in Branson.

Bev's favorite pastime was spent with her "precious family" and beloved friends. She and Bill spent every Sunday with family after church. Multiple times throughout the week, you'd find them having lunch at Wanida Thai with friends or leading the Seniors Group at Bellingham CTK. Bev had the gift of hospitality and would "adopt" people into the family everywhere she went- whether it was the jewelry counter at Kohl's, the checkout stand at Fred Meyer, the wait staff at Wanida's, or the person sitting next to her at church. She would add their phone number to her lengthy list at home and make her weekly calls to check in on them. Bev spread the love of Jesus everywhere she went. She faithfully served the Lord her whole life and stayed deeply connected in church until the week she was greeted in Heaven by her Savior.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, brother Marvin, and sister-in-law Leslie. She is survived by her daughters, Sheri Johnson and Tami (Hope) Dockter; granddaughter, MacKinzie (Colin) Sutton and grandson Nathan Dockter; great-grandsons, Jedson, Jericho, Jagger, and Judah; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, April 11th at 11am at New Song Church (4600 Guide Meridian, Bellingham).

William J. Johnston

Bill Johnston died at home in Bellingham on Palm Sunday, after spending his final months battling both ALS and metastasized cancer with the almost superhuman endurance for which he was known.

Bill would have fought forever if he could.

He is mourned by his wife of 46 years, Mary Kay Becker; his beloved children, Joe and Maureen; his sister Mary Beth and brother Ned; and countless friends, relatives, admiring colleagues, and appreciative former clients.

Let us spend a few moments on Bill's clients, for he spent many moments on them. A criminal defense attorney for more than 50 years, Bill was a fearless advocate. He fought hard and despised those who abused their power. And no doubt to the chagrin of the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Bill won more than his share of cases.

Born in 1947 to William and Gertrude Johnston, Bill grew up in a row house on Ives Street in the factory town of Waterbury, Connecticut. As a child of Catholic Waterbury, he learned to love basketball. In middle school, Bill scored the game-winning shot for Sacred Heart against their rivals, St. Thomas. When he came to class the next day, the nun had written on the chalkboard, “Thank you, Billy.”

Bill went on to receive a Jesuit education at Fairfield University, where he graduated with honors in history. In fact, Bill very nearly became a history professor, and he knew just about everything about WWII. This pursuit of knowledge was to honor his own father, who as part of the 743rd Tank Battalion, drove a tank onto Omaha Beach in the first wave of the Normandy invasion, and then, just a few months later, beat back the Panzer advance in the Battle of the Bulge.

Fortunately for us, Bill decided to become a lawyer. He earned his law degree from the University of Connecticut and joined Volunteers in Service to America to do legal aid. VISTA assigned him to Bellingham, Washington, where much to his surprise, he stayed for the rest of his life. It was a lot of work for low pay. (Bill was known then to subsist on tuna fish, peanut butter, and pancake mix). But he also had a bit of good luck, because he found a kindred spirit in Mary Kay who was also working there. They married in 1979 and Joe and Maureen followed soon after.

For the lawyers in the room (and we know there are many), we would be remiss if we did not celebrate some of Bill’s greatest legal achievements. He won State v. Fitzsimmons in 1980, a case that had to go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court despite what Bill thought was an irrefutable argument: in Washington, indigent defendants who ask for a lawyer have the right to one even when it's inconvenient, even when it's after hours, even when it's on the weekend. More than 30 years later, Bill proved he was still as relentless as ever when he won State v. Eriksen. In that case, fighting on behalf of another indigent defendant, he managed to persuade the Washington Supreme Court to twice grant reconsideration, and to finally come down on his client’s side. (Bill would want us to include the legal citations, which are 94 Wash. 2d 858 and 172 Wash. 2d 506, as he understood that not everyone was blessed with a photographic memory like he was.)

But most of you probably just remember Bill from around town because he talked at length to everyone he met. Maybe it was on the basketball court or at the gym where he worked out nearly every day. Maybe it was at the courthouse or downtown, wherever he was getting another coffee. Or maybe it was out by the Nooksack where he loved to spend time with his greatest friends and their dogs.

Somewhere, up there, Bill is still advocating. Just four hours after he passed away, a freshman at his beloved UConn sunk the game-winning three pointer in a buzzer-beater to defeat the Duke Blue Devils in one of the century’s greatest come-from-behind victories.

Bill, you weren’t known for taking it easy. We know that was you, reminding us to never give up.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, April 10 at 10:30 am at the Church of the Assumption (2116 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham), with a reception following at Westford’s Broadway Hall (1300 Broadway, Bellingham).

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to a charity that furthers Bill’s love of animals, his dedication to veterans, or the advancement of medical research at the University of Washington.

Darlene Kay Fox

Darlene entered the world in Seattle, WA, on August 27, 1942, to parents James and Barbara (Dolan) Welton, and left it peacefully on March 25, 2026, in Bellingham, WA.

Darlene was loved by all who knew her throughout her life. Her radiant smile, the twinkle in her eye and her amiable warmth drew people to her wherever she went. She had a natural gift of making others feel at ease and welcome. Her life was never one of privilege or ease, but she faced life’s challenges with resilience and determination.

Darlene had a creative spirit and enjoyed many interests including sewing, writing, playing piano, crafts, home decorating, and organizing social events, often in association with church, which she was actively involved in. The Meridian High School Homecoming Queen married her high school sweetheart, Richard Larson, shortly after graduation. She certainly was no stranger to change and lived in a variety of places, especially during her 20 years of marriage to Roger Bohannon while he served in the military. She even lived on a sailboat for a time while married to her beloved husband, Ray Fox, evidence of her willingness to embrace the unexpected. She found comfort and companionship towards the last chapter of life, enjoying several years of joy and laughter with her last husband, Jerry Carroll. All of them preceded her in death.

Darlene’s legacy is one of faith, kindness, resilience, and love. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

She was preceded in death by her son Craig Bohannon. Survivors include her daughters, Kellie Williams of Rochester, NY, and Jill Safari of Indian Shores, FL; and grandchildren, Derek Williams, Austin Williams, Leyla Safari, Hannah Safari, Emma Safari, and Tolàn Bohannon.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 5th, 2026, at 1:11pm at the Dolan home, 2517 43rd St., Bellingham, WA 98229.
