James Lincoln

James “Jim” Lincoln passed away suddenly on March 10th, 2026, at his home in Bellingham, Washington.

He was born in DeKalb, Illinois, to his parents Betty and James Lincoln, and spent nearly his entire life in Washington State. Jim graduated from Lake Washington High School and attended Green River Community College for two years before eventually settling in Bellingham, the place he would call home for most of his life.

Jim was a joyful soul with a sharp sense of humor and a natural talent for working with his hands. Whether he was renovating a house, building something from scratch, or fixing whatever needed fixing, he approached every project with creativity and enthusiasm.

He loved the outdoors and could often be found walking the beach in search of treasures, crab fishing, or exploring garage sales for hidden gems. Cooking was one of his greatest passions, especially when it meant gathering people together. Jim was known for organizing big barbecues and clambakes on the beach, feeding friends and family with the same generosity that defined his life.

Above all, Jim cherished his three daughters, who will miss him dearly. They carry with them the memories of countless adventures shared with their dad, guided by his motto: “Enjoy life, explore every opportunity.”

Jim was predeceased by his parents in the early 2000s. He is survived by his three daughters and his grandson.

A memorial with friends and family will be held later this year.

In lieu of flowers, donations to World Central Kitchen or your local food bank would be a kind way to honor Jim, a man who enjoyed exploring food traditions from around the world and loved to feed people.

Tammy Jean Stewart

Tammy Stewart, age 66, passed away on March 5, 2026, due to her long suffering from COPD.

Tammy was the youngest of four children born to Earl and Peggy Linn of Bellingham, and she was much younger than her siblings. Her parents died when she was still a young child and she was raised between her sisters and brother, moving around to Washington, Oregon, California, Connecticut, and Arizona. Although she moved frequently, she bloomed wherever she was planted. Tammy made friends easily and mastered many activities, such as baton twirling, cheerleading, and gymnastics.

To Tammy, Bellingham was always home, and it is where she moved to raise her four sons, Steve Earl, Shawn Eric, Tim Ryan, and Trevor Lee. Family was always a priority for Tammy.

She was a talented poet who shared her gift freely with others. She wrote two books, “Gliding on Gold Dusted Brow,” containing some of her earlier poetry, and “Just Suppose.” She continued writing until her illness made it difficult to continue. Tammy was a committed Christian woman and loved her Heavenly Father. She was also a loving mother and devoted her life to her family.

Tammy was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Sherry and Peggy Ann, and her nephew Scotty.

She is survived by her four sons, and many grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Earl “Skip” and wife Patty; her nephews and nieces who were like siblings at times: Teri, Robbie, Earleen, Danny, Dawn, and Wendy; and her many grand-nieces and nephews. Tammy felt privileged to assist in raising some of her grandchildren, including Faith, Timmy, and Jayden.

Tammy was ready to be with the Lord and is at peace now. There are no services planned at this time. She will be missed by her family as well as her many, many friends.

Warren Aller

Anyone who truly knew Warren Aller would agree that Warren’s greatest gift was his ability to connect with people. As a life-long educator, Warren impacted thousands of people and was known for his wit, compassion and dedication to communication and human connection.

Warren Aller was born on December 27, 1944, in Bonners Ferry, ID, to parents George Elmer and Marjorie (McDole) Aller, Warren passed away, surrounded by family on March 3, 2026, in Sedro Woolley, WA.

In the fall of 1967, Warren was hired as a high school English teacher at Klickitat High School. The following year he was hired at Blaine High School, where he would spend the next three decades of his K-12 career serving as high school teacher, principal at the primary, elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as interim superintendent for one year. Warren received many honors during his career in the public school system, including during the 1988-89 school year when Warren was honored at the White House as the principal of one of three “Blue Ribbon” model schools selected across the U.S. In 1990, Warren returned to the White House where, as principal of Blaine Elementary School in Blaine, WA, he received recognition for his curriculum leadership.

Once Warren retired from Blaine School District, he spent a few years working for locally owned Border Brokerage as a customer service representative. After that he went on to join Western Washington University’s Educational Leadership faculty where he taught for over two decades. His students remember his classes as practical and pragmatic, where he would give thoughtful assignments where he asked for deep reflection, critical thinking and the most “salient” ideas from the readings. Warren was known for giving meaningful advice, not just about education, but about life, making his teaching transcendent of the typical professor / student relationship. Educators who enrolled in Warren’s classes often kept track of his colorful “Warren Allerisms” – clever aphorisms that were as pragmatic as they were philosophical. He was known for telling his future administrators, “If you’re wondering whose job it is, look in the mirror.”

When he wasn’t being the “Gandalf” of education, Warren enjoyed spending his time giving back to his community. He spent a number of summers throughout his life working at Trident Seafoods in South NakNek, Alaska. Two of those summers he brought his wife, Sharon and their kids with him to the cannery. He was an integral part of several church communities in Whatcom County, including Sunrise Baptist in Custer, Northwood Chapel in Blaine, and Cornwall Church in Bellingham where he did everything from running the sound system to serving on boards and volunteering wherever he was needed. Some of his favorite things to do involved spending time with family, cooking (he was known for his legendary smoked salmon), playing pinochle, camping, taking extended motorcycle trips, making wine, travelling and reading (usually something of no literary value whatsoever).

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Elmer Aller and Marjorie (McDole) Aller; his sister, June (Aller) Heinemann, and her husband, Bernie Heinemann; and his brother-in-law, Ernest Irons.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sharon (Bell) Aller; his daughter, Mariah (Aller) Butenschoen, her husband, Shawn, and their sons, Owen and Bo Butenschoen; his son, Matthew Aller, his wife, Rhudora Barro-Aller, and their sons, Keaton, Kamden, and Kolton Aller. He is also survived by his sister, Jane (Aller) Irons; his brother, David Aller; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Warren’s celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 2:00 pm at the Blaine Middle School Performing Arts Center in Blaine, Washington. He will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Stanwood, Washington

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Western’s Educational Leadership Foundation in memory of Warren and his life’s work.

Janet Ruth Small

Janet Small, 82, died February 21 in Bellingham.

Born March 12, 1943, in Maysville, Kentucky, to the Rev. William C. and Arline Schnute, Jan was raised in greater Los Angeles with her younger sister and brother. She studied at various institutions including California State University at Long Beach, where she met ceramics instructor Bill Quirt. They married in 1966.

The couple enjoyed a free and nomadic artists’ existence and started their family in Southern California. With their two daughters, they experienced life throughout the American West, from San Francisco to northwest Montana, before finally settling in Bellingham in the 1990s.

Widowed in 1999, Jan began a fresh chapter with her second husband, Bellingham native Richard Small. She indulged new aspirations and explored new directions, among them pursuing a rekindled love of cooking through the culinary arts program at Bellingham Technical College, where she earned her certificate in baking. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining at home, and joining Richard in his passion for amateur radio. Jan loved to regale their regional network at the group’s daily check-in with news of her latest adventures with Richard and updates on her children’s lives.

Jan nursed Richard through a long illness and, following his death in 2015, she embraced her cherished independence and enjoyed the company of friends old and new, including Steve Hager of Fairhaven. Throughout life, she met each stage with optimism and self-assurance. Her personal motto was "Don’t look back."

Jan is survived by her daughter Tina and son-in-law Bob of Cleveland; daughter Sheri of Seattle; granddaughter Laurel of Asheville, North Carolina; and sister Jeanne of Long Beach, California.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the team at PeaceHealth Whatcom Hospice House for their extraordinary care and compassion, which helped make Jan's final days peaceful.
