Back to basics. It starts with your visual system. You can't hit what you can't see!
โI have major issues with the way theyโre these teaching kids to play the game nowadays,โ he said. โNobody taught me how to hit homers. Homers were the last thing you were thinking about when it comes down to hitting. You want to make sure you stay with the ball, you want to make sure you track the ball, you want to make sure you have an idea of what the pitcher is going to try and do against you..I think baseball needs to go back to the basics.โ - Ortiz
Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz appeared on WEEIโs โGresh & Keefeโ as part of WEEI/NESNโs Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon, and ripped the way young hitters approach the game today.

Train your brain ~ Elevate your game ~ Elite Focus
The next frontier in athletic performance is in Vision Training. The visual system is one of the most important systems for an athlete's performance yet it is often overlooked. 85-90% of learning & performance is directed by your vision! 40% of all connections heading into the brain come from the retina and the eye. So, if your vision is slow then your reaction will be slow. By training the visual system an athlete will cognitively process what they see faster and react with improved accuracy. Here at AthELITE InFOCUS, we evaluate an athlete's skill level by identifying strengths and areas that can be improved compared to other age/sport matched players on the Senaptec Sensory Station. A personal training protocol is then created for the next 10 sessions. Then an assessment is run to determine improvement from the baseline.
We offer High Performance Vision Training to improve eye-hand and eye-foot coordination, reaction time, peripheral awareness and visual processing. The ultimate goal for an athlete is to respond as quickly as possible with skill by training to strengthen muscles, improving speed, quickness, and power. For years, this training was only available to professional athletes. Dr. Scott Krauchunas is a member of the A-Team (group pf optometrists trained in the area of enhanced vision training). The group is headed by Dr. Don Teig, former vision trainer for the New York Yankees. As a member of the A-Team, Dr. Krauchunas has had the opportunity to test a number of professional athletes and organizations.
Hendricks Motor Sports, where we tested members of the pit crew.
LPGA in Grand Rapids, MI where we tested 86 of the women on the professional tour including the rookie of the year 2014, Lexi Thompson.
MLS Officiating crew
US Men's Volleyball team
The Miami Dolphins
IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. Most notable was Victor Cruz, wide receiver of the NY Giants, members of the women's German National Track Team, world record holder in the 400 m Paralympics, David Prince, and Olympic Bronze winner of the 800m from Kenya, Carvin Nkanata.
IMG Academy NFL Combines
Trap Shooters at the World Trap Shooting Championships at the Grand American in Sparta, IL
Since 2016 Dr. Krauchunas had the honor of working with a major league baseball organization during spring training.
The same protocols that we use for all of these projects, we utilize here in our facility. Additionally, because of our exposure to professional athletes we are able to use some of the most cutting edge sports training devices in the world. Interestingly, these devices are not only enhancing the athleteโs vision and improving eye-hand and eye-foot coordination but they are allowing us to identify current and past concussions, possibly predict risk of future injury, predict future success in a sport, and improving academic performance. Some of the training devices that Dr. Krauchunas employs are:
Sports vision testing protocol by M&S
Senaptec Sensory Station
Strobe Training
The Quick Board for foot speed and Eye-foot coordination
Reaction Trainer by Dynavision
Sanet Vision Integrator
The latest in concussion research is suggesting that the visual system has a crucial role in concussion identification and recovery, cognitive loading, and possibly injury prevention. The area of vision training is growing with many professional sports organizations contracting to optometrists for the sole purpose of training athletes to improve vision and visual processing to gain an edge over their competition.
