Curious about neuropsychology?🧠
Wondering about what is neuropsychology? 🤔

BrainWise has got you covered!

Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that studies, assesses, and treats brain functioning.

More specifically, neuropsychologists are trained to understand how the central nervous system is related to behavior, emotions, and everyday abilities.

Neuropsychologists are doctoral level professionals who have a background in neuroanatomy, brain diseases, and conditions. They also have training in mental health conditions and the study of the mind and how it affects behavior.

Neuropsychological evaluations can help to illuminate the factors that are leading to difficulties within the academic or work environment. Appropriate assessment and diagnosis is the first step towards setting up appropriate supports and treatment.

Our hearts are so heavy as we process the events that happened today at Belton High School. We have clients, and even our own children, at BHS and we are all trying to find the best way to communicate with our kids moving forward. We’ve put a few thoughts together for parents in our community to help your children process today’s events…
1. Encourage them to tell the story. Explaining to you where they were, what they saw, what they felt… Let them tell the story over and over to as many people as they want to share it with. Ask questions. Reminiscing is therapeutic after a traumatic event.
2. Watch for signs of trauma. Symptoms of trauma can take up to 6 weeks to present once a person is out of shock. Look for sleep changes, appetite changes, nightmares, stomach aches, unable to focus, irritably.
3. We recommend not letting your child isolate. Even if they sit in silence with the family. Being in the room with others is better than isolating.
4. Safety is going to be the most important thing in the coming weeks. Find ways to check in on your child and make sure that they are feeling safe going to school, and while at school.
The administrators and teachers did an amazing job today… Teachers sat in the dark with our students during the two hour lockdown and kept everyone calm, while administrators worked tirelessly to render aid and get the appropriate care for students. We are proud to be part of the Belton ISD community and days like today make us thankful for those that run our schools!
We have trauma counselors available if you feel like your student needs to speak with someone. Please email us at kerri@lakewoodcounselingcenter.com if you would like more info on trauma counseling.

Did you know that this week is OCD Awareness Week? People with OCD experience recurrent unwanted thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions), which they feel they cannot control. Rituals, such as handwashing, counting, checking or cleaning, are often performed in hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these rituals, however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them increases anxiety. Left untreated, obsessions and the need to perform rituals can take over a person's life. OCD is often a chronic, relapsing condition.

OCD is not an adjective and when the term OCD is used in a way to describe someone being "quirky," it's harmful to the people who have OCD. It can be misleading and create an unnecessary barrier to seeking and finding effective care and support.

Learn more about OCD by following organizations like the International OCD Foundation.
