Our rehab department, Rehab Synergies, invited guests in from the community this week to demonstrate our equipment and to educate them on the benefits of therapy. We are so proud of our therapists and the accomplishments of all of our residents. Above is our amazing gym where our residents have worked so hard to meet their goals. Benbrook’s beauty shop is open for business every other Tuesday! Our hair dresser, Ms. Bobbi Sanders comes in to give our residents haircuts, perms, blow outs and touch ups. The only thing our residents and family members have to do is let us know exactly what the resident needs. Come by Benbrook for a tour and take a look at the beauty shop!

Nurse of the Month!

Benbrook’s Resident Council has selected Marie Tshoba as the August Nurse of the Month. Marie has worked at Benbrook for the past 16 months. She graduated from Universal Health Services’ nursing school in 2011 and has worked as a nurse for the past five years. Marie comes from a family of healthcare professionals; her husband is also a LVN. We thank Marie for her commitment to our residents and appreciate all her hard work. Congrats Marie!

Back to School Bash!

Join us at Benbrook Nursing and Rehab on August 12th for our back to school celebration. We will start the fun at 11:30. We will have water balloon fights, cupcake walks, and a ring toss. For lunch we will have hotdogs, chips and yummy treats. We will be accepting donations for our local school. Please stop by at any time and drop off school supplies at 1000 McKinley Street, Benbrook. We look forward to seeing you!

Gladys Cottongame was evaluated for physical therapy services to help improve safety with mobility throughout the facility and to improve her balance. During her progression of therapy services, she went from ambulating with assistance for balance and safety to being able to ambulate up to 300 feet without any assistance. Mrs. Cottongame also has made improvements with her standing balance and ability to correct her posture as evident by her Tinetti score which measures gait and balance. With her improved balance and ability to ambulate longer distances safely, Mrs. Cottongame is now able to independently get to and from meaningful activities of choice and complete daily ADLs with less assistance from caregivers.

Patricia Brunson has been participating with Speech Therapy services to prevent deterioration of her cognitive abilities. Patricia has demonstrated progress with orientation and the ability to recall daily events. Patricia also worked with Speech therapy to complete a memory scrap book to aide in reminiscing of her past life events and current favorite daily activities. Staff and caregivers are now able to reminisce with Patricia during daily events.

Maria Smith has been volunteering at Benbrook for three years! She comes in every other week to perform for our residents. She picks from their favorite songs and has them sing along. She is a retired Crowley School Teacher and truly enjoys spending time with our residents. She not only performs for our residents but also for children all around Benbrook. Our residents love to see Maria here and we love having her! Thank you so much Maria for spending your free time with us!

Congratulations to Benbrook’s C.N.A of the month, Sharon Holloman! Sharon has been employed as a certified nursing assistant at Benbrook Nursing & Rehab for the past 18 years. She enjoys working closely with our residents and has no plans of leaving us any time soon. In the future, Sharon hopes to return to nursing school and become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. We appreciate all her hard work and dedication! Thank you Sharon for all you do.

David Yanowski admitted to Benbrook Nursing & Rehab on 5/27/16. He came to us after having a below the knee amputation on his right leg. He has been working very hard with our Rehab Department and is now getting fit for a prosthetic leg. Once he receives his prosthetic leg he will continue to work with Physical and Occupational therapy until he is back up on his feet. He hopes to become stronger, more independent and discharge back home.

Melissa Howard Carter at Benbrook Nursing & Rehab is now LOUD Certified. LOUD is a treatment for speech disorders associated with Parkinson’s Disease. It focuses on increasing vocal loudness. A speech therapist delivers this treatment in sixteen-one hour sessions spread over four weeks. Loud improves vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box through exercises. LOUD treatment brings the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness with no strain. Patients are trained to self-generate the adequate amount of loudness to make their speech understood. Congrats Melissa on becoming certified!

Ms. Belinda Norwood has been a resident at Benbrook Nursing and Rehab since December 10, 2015. Originally from Mississippi, she traveled all the way to Fort Worth Texas to have our facility care for her trach/dialysis needs. After being de-cannulated, Ms. Norwood was ready to make her way back home to her family. Her lovely Certified Nursing Assistant, Velorea Sibley baked her a delicious cake and sent her off with much love. Ms. Norwood’s son came to the facility to pick her up on June 18th. She has now joined her family back home in Mississippi. We are happy to have been a part of her success and honored to have watched her progress and meet her goals. Take care Ms. Belinda!

Ms. Belinda Norwood admitted to Benbrook Nursing & Rehab on 12/10/2015. Belinda is originally from Mississippi, she traveled all the way to Fort Worth, Texas so we could care for her trach/dialysis needs. When she first admitted, she was using a speaking valve. After many successful capping trials and therapy sessions she was successfully de-cannulated on May 18th. Our team is now working on getting her back home to her family by the end of this month. She is very excited to have reached her goals and see her family again.

Larry Singleton is the manager of Housekeeping at Benbrook Nursing &Rehab. He has worked at Health Care Services Group for 5 years. Prior to working at health care services, Larry was the house keeping manager at Montrose Hospital in New York. He also served in the U.S Air Force for 18 years and is a disabled Veteran. Having been in the military, Larry learned the importance of being dedicated, motivated, and managing his time. In his spare time, he speaks about drug abuse at churches and later hopes to expand his services to high school students. Larry has been writing a book called “The only cure for Drug Addiction is God”. His book is planned to release this December. We are very fortunate to have Larry join our team and we welcome him to the Benbrook Family

Glenda Harris started crocheting at the age of seven and has kept at it for the past 61 years. Merle Gilley saw one of Glenda’s beautifully crocheted Afghans and asked her to make one for him. Merle really wanted an Afghan in the Harley Davidson colors. Glenda spent two whole months crocheting this lovely Afghan for him. She wanted him to have something special that was meant just for him. Glenda made the Afghan black and orange just like Merle wanted and added in white and gray to make it pop. Merle loves this piece of art and is very grateful to Glenda for taking her time to make this for him.

We celebrated Nursing Home Week at Benbrook with our annual tropical Luau. We had two beautiful ladies Grace Evangelista and Courtney Evangelista come out to perform for our residents. They taught us some traditional dances which were a lot of fun and required lots of movement. We served pork sliders, pineapples and fruit punch. Grace and Courtney pulled our staff up to the front to join them in entertaining our residents. Mr. Steven Duncan was crowned King and joined the girls in the grand finale. A good time was had by all!

Meet our Residents Mr. and Mrs. Cottongame! This lovely couple just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on April 21st! They have two children and two grandchildren. Gladys met Franklin when she was 18 years old and they got married shortly after. Franklin worked to support his family and Gladys stayed home to raise their children. These two lovely souls were separated for a short time when Franklin went to a nursing facility while Gladys was still living at home. After Gladys admitted to Benbrook Nursing & Rehab, Franklin transferred over to reunite with her. We are thrilled to have them join our family!

Every year for Mothers Day, the ladies of Benbrook get together for Mothers Day Tea. This year Ms. Hildegard Rowe attended the Tea Party with her lovely daughter Lydia and her three beautiful grand daughters Kana, Heather and Amelia. They enjoyed their tea and showered Ms. Rowe with a few gifts. It’s always nice to see our Residents enjoying moments like these with their family. A good time was had by all!

Liz is Benbrook’s new Social Worker! She graduated in 2013 with her Masters in Social Work from Abilene Christian University. After graduating she worked at a homeless shelter for about a year and then moved into home health and long term care. She likes to spend her free time with her dog Jackson and her loved ones. She enjoys painting and working on DIY projects. Long term care has always been a passion of hers and she is excited to start her journey here at Benbrook. We are very excited to have her join our team!

Mr. Bruce Barta admitted to Benbrook Nursing & Rehab on 3/31/16. When he first admitted he was complaining of back pain daily and was slightly confused. Bruce is now active in the facility. He enjoys visiting with other residents. He no longer complains of back pain, he is stable with his medical regime. He is now able to sign himself out of the facility and go on walks. He enjoys reading old newspapers and talking about his past. He is currently receiving physical therapy and hopes to discharge back home shortly.
