When do you need orthotics?

Orthotics are designed to put your feet in a neutral position, improving alignment and providing essential support for your feet and ankles.

Over-the-Counter Inserts: These are suitable for mild, occasional pain or for providing extra cushioning and support during long days on your feet. They work well for general, minor foot issues.

Custom-Fitted Orthotics: These are necessary when you experience persistent, chronic pain, or have specific structural issues like severe flat feet, high arches, arthritis, or recurring plantar fasciitis. Custom orthotics are tailored to your unique foot structure and gait, providing long-term correction and support that generic inserts cannot match.

Your insurance plan may cover custom orthotics. Your HSA/FSA will likely cover over the counter inserts and custom orthotics.

Rheumatoid arthritis, RA, typically involves both hands and or feet. The joint stiffness lasts even after you start walking. There is often swelling. This involves the immune system and is progressive. We have many patients with RA that are able to stay active with help from their rheumatologist and us!

Treating osteoarthritis involves treating the pain and the function. Orthotics and shoe changes can help. Pain relievers and injections can help. Moving the joint and physical therapy are important. We talk about joint surgery if the pain isn't improving and it is affecting your walking and activity.

There is a difference between osteoarthritis and inflammatory or rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is degenerative and will slowly get worse, this is called "wear and tear" arthritis. Inflammatory arthritis is autoimmune, the joints get inflamed and often go through flares. These are treated in different ways.
