Valerie got her start in community-based care just months before Covid 19 changed everyone’s lives forever. Officially, she worked as the Business Office Coordinator in a Memory Care community, but she was often found assisting residents with video calls, sharing a hug on the inside for a family member who so badly wanted the embrace on the outside, helping residents create letters and pictures to mail to their loved ones, and digging to the depths of her creativity to help keep connections while the world was so isolated and scary. In September 2021, Valerie was ready for a change and began her current role at Adara Oaks as the Business Office Manager.
Adara Oaks was Valerie’s first experience in an SNC community, but she was ready to join forces in the behavioral/mental health world and be part of changing a broken system. Valerie’s own personal challenges with mental health had shown her that support services are often hard to come by or absent altogether. Now, four years later and even on the hard days, she is grateful to be part of the valuable work being done at Adara Oaks and for the opportunity to make a difference for the 42 residents in the community.
Valerie says, “The last four years at Adara have come with challenges but also with so many victories and growth. Growth of the community, growth of our processes, growth of our experiences, growth of the residents and growth within myself.” Her own growth has been aided by Vanda Health’s Grow With Us program. Valerie explains, “I couldn't afford to go back to school or to pay for the administrator license but when God has direction for your life, the pathway will be paved before you. This pathway that paved itself before me was the Grow with Us program. The opportunity to finally do something for me and to advance my career presented right in front of me, and with a few more words of encouragement, I took the leap and applied.”
Valerie took advantage of the Grow With Us certification pathway to take the 40-hour ALF/RCF Administrator Training Course offered by OHCA and recently passed the exam to become a licensed administrator. She is excited for the next chapter in her career. “I am so passionate about the work we are doing and want to continue to lead by example, especially on the hard days,” Valerie says. “I want to lead as an Administrator with compassion, understanding, trust, and a lot of laughter. I hope to inspire those I work with to do the right thing, even when it is hard. I hope to eventually build a team of professionals who share my passion for our SNC communities and continue to be the change for the people who are so often overlooked and undersupported.”
