Surgery can save a child’s life.

But what happens next? Can they go to school? Make friends? Walk on their own? Stay healthy?

We’re working toward a future where the answer is always “yes.” Right now, we’re still laying the foundation: building hospital teams, training parents, creating systems that didn’t exist before.

Our mission is clear: survival and thriving. That’s why we work to make sure every child born with spina bifida or hydrocephalus has access to treatment, aftercare, and a future with dignity and possibility.

💛 World Folic Acid Awareness Week 💛

This week, from January 5-11, ReachAnother is joining in on raising awareness about the power of folic acid — a simple vitamin that can help prevent serious birth defects when taken before and early in pregnancy.

Early awareness saves lives. Let’s share the message and support healthier beginnings for every baby. Helping flour realize its full potential-the ability to eliminate vitamin and mineral deficiencies--requires active involvement of public private-civic partnerships.

✨At just 3 months old, Wegatha received her first surgery for spina bifida followed soon after by a shunt to treat hydrocephalus. Today, she’s two years old and making good progress: walking with support, communicating clearly, and meeting new milestones with every follow-up visit.

Thanks to ReachAnother’s multidisciplinary care systems, Wegatha receives coordinated follow-up for clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) and physical therapy. Her caregivers are guided and supported every step of the way with health education and folic acid to prevent future neural tube defects.

It takes a committed team to provide the kind of treatment and aftercare children with neural tube defects need to thrive, and building that team is exactly what ReachAnother is here to do. 💙

Warm holiday wishes from ReachAnother Foundation!

This season, we’re reflecting on what made the year meaningful — the people who stood with us, believed in the mission, and helped turn care into action. Because of you, the work continues, and the impact grows. We’re grateful to head into the new year together.

Supporting Ethiopian colleagues to learn alongside international teams, sharpening skills, gaining new perspectives, and building the confidence to lead the future of pediatric neurosurgery in Ethiopia is part of ReachAnother's mission. 🌍🧠

A few months ago we sponsored three final-year neurosurgery residents from Addis Ababa University for a one-month observership in Bangalore, India. Through hands-on exposure and clinical insight into pediatric neurosurgical care, these rising leaders returned with renewed passion and we can already tell they’ll be strong advocates for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Ethiopia.

Investing in people is how lasting impact is built.

We are pleased to share that we just finalized the development of a clinical assessment checklist for assistive devices, created in collaboration with the Ethiopian Physiotherapy Association and the Alliance for Birth Defects. 💕

This checklist is a major step forward in ensuring fair, transparent, and evidence-based procurement and distribution of assistive devices for children affected by spina bifida. Over the next three years, it will help guide our efforts to support more than 2,000 children with the right devices that match their clinical needs.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the dedicated physiotherapy professionals who invested their time, expertise, and passion to develop this important tool. 🤝

Meet Soliana, a bright and strong 6-year-old little girl. ✨

Born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, Soliana has already undergone two major surgeries at Ayder hospital in northern Ethiopia. Thanks to the multidisciplinary care systems now in place at Ayder she receives ongoing support that touches every part of her healing journey from clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) to regular physical therapy at the newly equipped PT unit, and even health education for her mother to prevent future neural tube defects.

ReachAnother sponsored aftercare programs provide coordinated, compassionate aftercare that every child with SBH deserves. Today, Soliana is attending school, proving just how far a child can go when surgery, aftercare, and family support come together. 🌱💪

A Special Challenge With Double the Healing! 🌟

There’s something special about this time of year. Maybe it’s the pull of family and community. Or the urge to do something good and meaningful before the year closes. At ReachAnother, we believe that generosity has a ripple effect and giving doesn't have to be big to matter.

Our year-end campaign is underway—and this week, every gift goes twice as far! From Dec 2–10, our Board Chair, David Morissey, is matching all donations up to $3,000. Join us in building a world where every child has the chance to grow and thrive. When we care beyond borders, we create a better future for everyone. 🙌

Over 400 Healing Kits are now packed and ready to support families caring for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Ethiopia.

These kits are filled with essential supplies that help caregivers confidently manage aftercare at home including catheters, thermometer, hygiene items, caregiver guides, and more.

We thank everyone who donated to make these possible to help families start their healing journey with the tools they need.

🏥💙 Stronger ICU care for tiny patients!

Zewditu Center’s new Pediatric Neurosurgery ICU team just completed an in-depth training led by experts in pediatric neurocritical care. From emergency response protocols to neuromonitoring and post-op care, the team is now better equipped to care for babies and children after complex neurosurgery. We are so proud of how the new Zewditu Pediatric Neurosurgery Center is rapidly becoming a hub for expertise and exemplary pediatric care.
