📣 Movement Monday!

Freeze Dance Fun! 🕺

Freeze dance is a classic for a reason! Kiddos love the music and movement, but it’s also a great way to build body awareness, self-regulation, and motor planning skills. 🧠

🥶 When the music stops, kiddos have to pause their bodies, listen carefully, and control their movements, all key parts of developing executive functioning, motor planning, and attention.

Try it at home! Pick a few favorite songs, set clear rules (dance when the music plays, freeze when it stops), and let your child lead sometimes to boost confidence and creativity. 🤩

📣 Fine Motor Friday!

Buttoning might seem like a small daily task, but it’s actually a big fine motor skill! 👕

When kiddos practice buttoning, they’re working on:
✨ Finger strength and dexterity by using small muscles to pinch, push, and pull
✨ Bilateral coordination by using both upper extremities together with different movements
✨ Hand-eye coordination by lining up and fitting the button through the hole or lining up the snaps
✨ Independence and confidence by mastering self-care routines like dressing!

💡 Try starting with large buttons on loose fabric (like a dress-up shirt or button board), then work toward smaller or tighter buttons as their skills improve.

If your kiddo needs extra support building fine motor or self-help skills, give us a call or click the link in our bio to get started today! 🩵

📣 Ways We Communicate Wednesday!

Did you know that eye gaze is one of the earliest ways children learn to communicate? Before words ever appear, kiddos use their eyes to share attention, connect, and express what they want! 💬

Eye gaze helps children:
👀 Build joint attention by looking at a toy, then back at you, to “say” they want it
👀 Learn social cues by understanding when someone is looking at them or at something important
👀 Develop early communication by laying the foundation for gestures, sounds, and words

Try narrating what your kiddo is looking at (“You see the bubbles! Let’s pop them!”) to help turn those moments of eye contact into meaningful communication.

If your kiddo needs extra support developing communication or connection skills, give us a call or click the link in our bio to get started today! 🩵

📣 Movement Monday!

Rolling a ball back and forth is such a simple game but it packs a big developmental punch! 💪

This back-and-forth play helps kiddos build:
🏀 Core strength and balance as they reach and shift their weight
⚾️ Hand-eye coordination while tracking and timing the roll
⚽️ Social and communication skills through turn-taking and shared attention
🏐 Motor planning as they learn how much force to use

💡 Try using different sizes or textures of balls for variety or sit on the floor face-to-face to make it even more interactive!

If you’re looking for extra support for your kiddo’s motor, sensory, or developmental skills, give us a call or click the link in our bio to get started today! 🩵

📣 Fine Motor Friday!

Coin drops are a simple and fun way to work on fine motor skills! 💰✨ They help kiddos strengthen their hand muscles, improve grasp, and build coordination, all while having fun “feeding” the coins through a slot or container.

Another great idea with coin drops is to use your feet to push the coins in! 🦶 This works on trunk stability, balance, and coordination too, turning a simple fine motor task into a full-body challenge! 🙌

🧠 October is ADHD Awareness Month!

At Little Hands Therapy, we celebrate the creativity, energy, and unique strengths of children with ADHD. ✨ ADHD isn’t about being “distracted,” it’s about brains that process the world differently. With understanding, structure, and the right supports, kids with ADHD can thrive in school, play, and daily life. 🌟

Therapy can help kids build tools for focus, self-regulation, and confidence through movement, play, and connection. 💪

This month (and every month!), let’s work together to promote awareness, acceptance, and support for all kiddos who process the world differently. 🩵

📣 Ways We Communicate Wednesday!

This week’s sign is: PLAY 🎉

To sign play in American Sign Language (ASL), hold up both hands in the letter “Y” shape (thumb and pinky out, other fingers in), and twist your wrists back and forth a few times. 🤙🤙

We use play all the time in therapy because play is how kids learn best! It builds social connection, communication, problem-solving, and emotional regulation.

Try signing play with your child next time you’re getting ready for a fun activity! 🩵

💙💛 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

At Little Hands Therapy, we celebrate the incredible strengths, personalities, and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome every day. 💛 Each child brings their own unique way of learning, communicating, and connecting with the world, and that’s something to be proud of. 🌎

Down Syndrome Awareness Month is about promoting inclusion, understanding, and opportunities for every person to reach their full potential. With the right supports, like speech, occupational, and physical therapy, children with Down syndrome can build independence, confidence, and lifelong skills. 💪

Let’s continue to spread awareness, kindness, and acceptance this month and beyond. 💙💛

📣 Movement Monday is back!

Sensory socks are an amazing way to support body awareness, regulation, and movement! 🧦✨

They provide deep pressure and resistance, helping kiddos feel grounded and organized while they move, stretch, and play. Peep another tip! 👀 Add in extra pillows and blankets for even more proprioceptive input, the more cozy resistance, the better! 💪🛏️

Sensory play like this builds coordination, motor planning, and confidence through fun, playful movement.

📣 October is also Sensory Processing Awareness Month!

Sensory processing is how our brains take in and make sense of information from the world. 🌀For many kiddos, this process happens automatically. But for some, sensory input can feel overwhelming, under-responsive, or confusing. 😖

🧠 Research shows that sensory processing differences can affect play, learning, and participation in daily routines. Occupational therapy supports children by providing play-based, individualized strategies that help them regulate, feel safe, and build the skills they need to thrive at home, school, and in the community. 💪

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible kiddos and families navigating sensory processing challenges and spreading awareness so every child’s needs are understood and supported. 🤩
