A 4 Asthma

A 4 Asthma At "A 4 ASTHMA", we believe that every person is entitled to breathe clean, fresh, and healthy air, especially our children.

Unfortunately, in the United States, asthma affects approximately 25 million people, with the highest rates existing among Black adults. Far too many communities are faced with high levels of pollution, to which many asthma-related deaths are attributed. Asthma, though common, is often not diagnosed and left untreated. However, many of the risk factors for developing asthma, such as smoking, indoor air pollution at home, and exposure to chemical irritants or industrial dust in the workplace can be managed or avoided. The “A 4 ASTHMA” campaign targets communities most affected by asthma. It will provide information and resources for community members; educate individuals about asthma risks; and advocate for clean, fresh, healthy air for everyone regardless of their zip code. Risks of Flu with Asthma
> Worsened Symptoms: The flu virus inflames and narrows airways, increasing coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

> Asthma Attacks: Respiratory infections like the flu are a leading cause of asthma attacks, affecting over 80% of them.

> Serious Complications: Increased risk of pneumonia and other respiratory infections.

Prevention is Key
> Get Vaccinated: The annual flu shot is the best protection for everyone 6 months and older, especially those with asthma, to prevent severe illness and hospitalization, say the American Lung Association and Asthma Canada.

> Practice Hygiene: Frequent handwashing and covering coughs/sneezes.

>Avoid Sick People: Limit contact with those who are ill.

What to Do If You Get Sick
> Follow Your Action Plan: Use your quick-relief inhaler and adjust medicines as directed by your written plan.

> Stay Hydrated & Rest: Drink plenty of fluids (water, broth) and get lots of rest.

> Call Your Doctor Immediately: Especially if symptoms worsen (e.g., severe breathing issues, high fever, increased mucus).

> Consider Antivirals: Your doctor might prescribe antiviral drugs (like Tamiflu) within 48 hours of symptoms to reduce severity.

> Use a Peak Flow Meter: Track lung function if you have one.

What to Avoid
> Certain Antivirals: People with asthma should avoid zanamivir (Relenza) and peramivir (Rapivab) as they can worsen asthma.
