Opposite action may be a new therapy buzzword on TikTok, but what actually is this DBT practice?

🔄Opposite action encourages the inversion of instinct in order to change one’s emotions!

🤔For example, when you’re feeling upset or emotionally withdrawn, your instinct may be to retreat. It might feel easier to just stay in bed, not to move or eat, and listen to sad music. Opposite action, however, encourages you to do exactly what you don’t want to do: move, socialize, or go outside. By forcing yourself to alter your instinctual behavior, you’re also making the conscious effort to change your emotions.

🔂You can repeat the opposite action until you feel the change of emotion—you just need a bit of patience and an open mind. Next time your emotions feel overwhelming for your situation, try opposite action and see how you feel afterwards. You might like the change!

Mental Health Monday: Small ways to make the world a better place💜🫂

Though this may sound like an intimidating task, the most basic parts of “making the world better” come from the small actions of bettering your community. This Mental Health Monday, we’re showcasing some ideas that are fulfilling, community-oriented, and easy.

Helping your community doesn’t always need to be intense or complex. Sometimes, it’s the small things that can really boost someone’s day or help the environment!

Not only are they beneficial to others, these actions can be beneficial to oneself. Practicing gratitude, kindness, and community service can be related to an increase of dopamine production in the body, making people happier! Confidence can also come from commitment and dedication to a task, such as these small steps to making the world a bit better.

Today is Day and at Moonlight Mental Health we want to recognize a fearless leader for both his contribution to Civil Rights in the United States and to the larger conversation about mental health access.

People of color continue to face unequal access to mental health and healthcare services. King himself battled issues such as depression and suicidal ideation. This is a problem that needs more attention.

In the words of Rawle Andrews, Jr.: “…it is critical that we reflect on how we can better incorporate the principles of belonging, equity, and anti-racism into our day-to-day work inside and outside of the mental health arena.”
