FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Retired Lt. Col. Kay Couch-Lopez Donates $20,000 to Support Shelter Expansion for Rescue Dogs in
Arkansas
ALEXANDER, AR — Kay Couch-Lopez has made a transformative $20,000 donation to Adopt-A-Stray
Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to saving homeless dogs across the South and placing
them into loving homes. The gift will fund construction of a dedicated senior dog sanctuary on the
organization’s property in Alexander.
Founded in January 2010 by Kelley Prichard, Adopt-A-Stray operates with a small team and a mission to
end the euthanasia of adoptable pets through rescue, foster placement, adoption, and strong advocacy
for spay-and-neuter initiatives. The organization is funded entirely through adoption fees and donations.
Couch-Lopez’s contribution will help create a peaceful, home-like sanctuary for senior dogs — a
prefabricated 12×20 insulated structure designed to provide a calm environment for aging animals to
heal, decompress, and live comfortably. Dogs who are medically stable will be available for adoption,
while those who are not will be cared for for the remainder of their lives. The sanctuary will be furnished
like a small living space with sofas, chairs, and cushions rather than traditional kennels, promoting
comfort and reduced stress for elderly animals.
“This gift means everything to us,” said Prichard. “Senior dogs are often overlooked, yet they deserve the
most compassion and dignity. This sanctuary will give them a quiet place to feel safe and loved.”
Adopt-A-Stray is also working toward its long-term vision of constructing a 30×30 main shelter building on
its property. The proposed facility will require a concrete slab foundation estimated at $8,000–$14,000, a
roughly $25,000 insulated structure with electricity, plumbing, septic installation, fencing, and
indoor/outdoor kennels. The organization is actively seeking local contractors, tradespeople, and
businesses willing to donate labor or materials or offer discounted services to help complete the project.
Couch-Lopez was inspired to support the rescue after learning about developing partnerships to impact
local Veterans and their pets.
Prichard, who spent years as a veterinary technician before launching the rescue full-time, said the need
for a dedicated shelter space has become urgent. The organization currently relies on only three foster
homes plus her own residence, which is filled with crates to accommodate rescued dogs. Rising costs
and a decline in available fosters have made expansion critical for the rescue to continue operating
effectively.
“Kay’s generosity is not only helping dogs,” Prichard added. “It’s helping us build a future where we can
save more lives, support veterans, and continue this mission for years to come.”
Couch-Lopez hopes her donation will inspire others to step forward and match her contribution to fully
fund the shelter project.
