Exciting news! We need a cure! šŸ’™šŸ’œšŸ’™

BIG UPDATE: The president has signed the bipartisan spending package into law that includes a $100 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and $41.5 million for implementation of the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in fiscal year 2026. šŸŽ†

With the $100 million funding increase now finalized, the total annual federal investment in Alzheimer’s and dementia research will be approximately $3.9 billion.

The BOLD funding represents the highest annual investment since the law was enacted, strengthening the nation’s public health response to Alzheimer’s and other dementia in communities across the country.

This victory belongs to every advocate who raised their voice in support of this important investment. This wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication to the cause. šŸ’œ

BRRRRRRR! 🄶 Winter can be tough on all of us but especially on older adults as they often feel cold more easily. Staying warm is important for staying safe, healthy and comfortable. Here are a few simple, friendly tips to help seniors stay cozy all season:

• Layer Up: Wear comfy, warm clothes in layers. Add hats, scarves and gloves when heading outdoors.
• Keep the House Cozy: Set the thermostat to 68–70°F, close curtains at night and block drafts for extra warmth.
• Use Heaters Safely: Choose space heaters with safety features and never leave them on unattended. Electric blankets are great — just use them on low and turn off before sleep.
• Eat Warm Foods: Enjoy soups, oatmeal and hot drinks to help your body stay warm.
• Stay Active: Gentle exercises like stretching or walking around the house help boost circulation and warmth.
• Watch for Cold Signs: If you notice shivering, pale skin or confusion, warm up right away and call a doctor if needed.
• Be Careful Outside: Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes and avoid icy areas. Ask for help with errands if needed.
• Get Help: Caregivers can assist with dressing, meals, safe heating and outings.

Keeping our aging loved ones warm is key to a happy, healthy winter. If you or someone you know could benefit from a little extra help, give Favor Home Care a call at 501-725-2273. šŸ’™

Holiday visits are a special time to connect with your older loved ones and check in on their well-being. While enjoying your time together, be sure to look for any changes in their home, daily routines or mood. Simple things to look for include:

• Is the house safe and tidy? Are there any signs of neglect or clutter?
• Is there enough fresh food? Has your loved one lost weight or missed meals?
• Has their social activity changed? Are they withdrawing from hobbies or friends?
• Do they seem more forgetful, confused or down than before?
• Are they keeping up with personal hygiene and dressing as usual?
• Do you notice unexplained bruises or signs of falls?

Noticing these signs can help you decide if your loved one needs more support to stay safe and comfortable at home. By staying attentive, keeping open conversations, and reaching out for resources when needed, you can help them feel cared for and supported during this stage of life.

And if you notice changes, please reach out to us ... we're here to help!

Tom Hanks was in his trailer on the set of "News of the World" in 2020 when his assistant walked in, holding a folded note. The message was simple: a man named James Mallory, a former high school teacher from Ohio, was dying of pancreatic cancer. His daughter, Emily, had reached out through multiple fan forums and Twitter, hoping someone might get a message to Hanks. Her father’s final wish was to hear Forrest Gump’s voice one last time.

The request hit Hanks hard. He paused, reread the note, then quietly asked his assistant to find a contact number. Within an hour, he was holding a phone, listening to it ring on speaker in a small hospice room 2,000 miles away. Emily had no idea if the message had gotten through, and when her phone lit up with a California number, she almost ignored it. But something made her answer.

"Hello, is this Emily Mallory?" the familiar voice asked.

She froze. "Yes?"

"This is Tom Hanks. I heard your dad wants to talk to Forrest Gump. Is he around?"

The room went silent. Her mother gasped. Nurses paused in the hallway. Emily rushed to her father’s bedside and gently placed the phone near his ear. James was weak, he hadn’t spoken much in days. But when Hanks shifted into Forrest’s voice and said, ā€œHi, James... Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates,ā€ a faint smile spread across the old man’s lips.

Tears streamed down Emily’s face. Her father, barely able to speak, mouthed, ā€œThank you.ā€

Hanks continued in Forrest’s slow Southern drawl, weaving personal comfort with signature Gump wisdom. ā€œI don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze... but I think maybe, both is happenin’ at the same time.ā€

For a few precious minutes, James was no longer a cancer patient in a hospital bed. He was listening to his favorite character, the one who helped him through his divorce, who kept him company through nights of grading papers alone, who made him laugh even when life seemed unforgiving.

What made the moment even more powerful was that Hanks never slipped out of character. He addressed James as Forrest would have, comforting him not as a celebrity to a fan, but as a kind-hearted friend on a park bench. James held Emily’s hand, a tear rolling down his temple, and whispered, ā€œBest day... ever.ā€

Emily would later describe that moment as ā€œa miracle in slow motion.ā€ Her father passed away quietly the next morning, still smiling.

Hanks never mentioned the call publicly. No social media post, no press release. Emily shared the story on a grief support page a month later. A user on Reddit reposted it, and from there, it spread, touching thousands who had grown up with Forrest Gump’s voice in their ears and kindness in their hearts.

A hospice nurse who had witnessed the call said she’d never seen a patient’s face change so quickly. ā€œHe was so tired, so far gone. But when he heard Forrest Gump, something lit up inside him.ā€

Emily keeps the phone recording to this day. She plays it sometimes, not just to hear her father’s last conversation, but to remind herself what simple kindness from a stranger, no matter how famous, can mean to someone facing the end.

In the quietest room, a voice from a film brought peace where medicine could not.

There’s no place more important right now than home.

Everyone should be able to live at home, even if it means getting a little help. Staying in your own home for as long as possible, also known as "aging in place," has become a goal for many seniors these days. Not only do many find it more attractive to stay at home among the places and people they know best, many are also finding it a less expensive option than some alternatives, including senior housing and assisted living facilities.

Staying at home is not without its challenges, however. As we age, even familiar surroundings can become difficult to navigate due to mobility and health issues. Fortunately, agencies like Favor Home Care can extend a senior’s ability to live independently, and can make aging in place a viable alternative through every stage of the aging process. Not only can in-home caregivers provide physical assistance for a variety of everyday activities, they can also boost a senior’s well being by providing transportation, housekeeping help, and essential companionship.
