The holiday season can be a lot — sensory overload, disrupted routines, social expectations, and endless to-dos. If this time of year feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Here are a few Neurodivergent-friendly strategies to help you navigate the season with more comfort and less stress:
🧠 1. Create Your Sensory Safe Zone
Bring noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, sunglasses, or anything that helps regulate sensory input. Give yourself permission to take breaks.
🗓️ 2. Protect Your Routines
Even small pieces of your normal routine — sleep, meals, movement — can help anchor your nervous system when the schedule gets chaotic.
💬 3. Set Communication Boundaries
You don’t have to attend every event or participate in every conversation. “I need a moment,” “I’m stepping away,” or “I’m not up for that today” are valid.
🎁 4. Gift-Giving Your Way
If picking gifts is stressful, use wish lists, repeatable gifts, donations, or experience-based gifts. It’s about thoughtfulness, not perfection.
🍽️ 5. Navigate Food Stress Compassionately
Whether you have sensory food sensitivities or executive function challenges, allow yourself to eat what feels safe and comfortable. No guilt.
💖 6. Prioritize Your Energy
If you have limited spoons, spend them intentionally. Choose the events or people who help you feel safe, supported, or joyful.
✨ Most importantly:
Your needs are real, your boundaries are valid, and you deserve a holiday season that doesn’t drain you.

✨ The northern lights are making a rare appearance in NWA right now! Unusual. Beautiful. Easy to miss if you aren’t looking up. So of course we’re gonna post about it! 😁

Neurodivergence can be like that too—unexpected in familiar places, often overlooked, but no less real.

At PsychologyWorks, we recognize that brilliance doesn’t always follow the expected path. And that’s exactly why it matters.

🌦️ Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Neurodiversity

What is SAD?

1. Sensory and environmental sensitivity
Many neurodivergent people experience heightened sensitivity to light, temperature, and routine changes. Shorter days and reduced sunlight can disrupt sensory balance and emotional well-being.

2. Routine and energy changes
Seasonal shifts often alter structure and routines — less sunlight, more time indoors. For neurodivergent individuals who rely on consistency, these changes can increase fatigue or anxiety.

3. Overlapping symptoms
SAD symptoms — like low motivation, fatigue, and sleep changes — can overlap with neurodivergent experiences such as autistic inertia or ADHD burnout. This can lead to underdiagnosis.

4. Biological and sensory regulation factors
Differences in circadian rhythm and melatonin regulation may increase SAD risk for neurodivergent people.

5. Support strategies can overlap
Light therapy, movement, gentle structure, and sensory-friendly routines can support both SAD and neurodivergent well-being.

Ways to help:
-Get light, natural is the best!
-Keep a structured but gentle routine
-Move your body and eat protein foods
-Stay socially connected.

Halloween + ADHD = The Perfect Mix of Fun… with a Little Planning! 🧠✨

October isn’t just for costumes and candy — it’s also ADHD Awareness Month! At PsychologyWorks, we know that Halloween can be exciting and overwhelming for kids (and adults!) with ADHD.

Here are a few ways to make this season more enjoyable for everyone:
🕸️ Choose costumes that are comfortable and sensory-friendly.
🍬 Set clear routines around trick-or-treating to reduce surprises.
👻 Practice social moments ahead of time — like saying “trick or treat!” or taking turns.
🌙 Build in breaks between events to recharge.

With the right support and understanding, Halloween can be less about stress — and more about joy, connection, and celebrating our wonderfully neurodiverse brains. 💜

✨Meet our owner and founder, Dr. Stephanie Steele-Wren (aka Dr. Steph to most) — Licensed Psychologist and one of the few female Psychologists in Northwest Arkansas specializing in formal psychological testing.
She’s passionate about helping adults find clarity through comprehensive ADHD and autism assessments, and proud to represent the LGBTQIA+ community in a field that needs more diverse voices. 🌈
And real talk — major props to the influencers who make this look easy. Our whole team felt so vulnerable stepping in front of the camera to share what we do — but we’re here, showing up anyway, because mental health matters.
