When parents think about preparing for kindergarten, they often focus on letters and numbers.

But during kindergarten visits and interviews, schools are often observing something deeper - how children move, participate, and approach activities.

Simple tasks like drawing a picture of themselves, listening to a story, transitioning between activities, or playing with other children give teachers insight into skills like:

• body awareness
• coordination
• attention
• fine motor comfort
• regulation

These skills grow from early sensory-motor development - the foundations that help children feel confident and ready to learn.

At Wonder Kids Pediatric Therapy, occupational therapy helps children strengthen these foundations so they can feel comfortable, confident, and prepared for the kindergarten classroom.

If you have questions about your child’s development or would like support preparing for kindergarten, reach out - we’re happy to help.

Many parents worry about whether their child knows letters, numbers, or can write their name before kindergarten.

And yes — many schools will ask children to write their name or draw a picture during kindergarten visits.

But teachers are often looking at something deeper while they watch.

They’re noticing things like:

• How the child holds the pencil
• Whether they stay engaged in the task
• If they can follow directions
• How they handle a mistake
• Whether they can sit and focus for a few minutes

In other words — they’re looking at the foundations that support learning.

Regulation.
Motor control.
Attention.
Sensory organization.

When those systems are strong, writing, reading, and academics become much easier.

At Wonder Kids, we focus on building those foundations so children feel confident and ready for the classroom.

If you’re wondering about your child’s kindergarten readiness, we offer free developmental consultations

Devices like the SNOO and the Merlin aren’t “bad.”

But they aren’t neutral either.

When babies spend extended time contained and on their backs, the risk of flat spots increases - and we’re seeing more helmet referrals because of it.

Safe sleep is essential.

But awake movement is where development happens.

If you want guidance on tummy time, positioning, or preventing flat spots early -we’re here.

Not all baby products are created equal.

Many of today’s “must-have” baby items are designed to make life easier — and some truly do help in small doses.

But babies don’t develop through stillness.

They develop through:
movement, floor time, tummy time, rolling attempts, and repetition.

When products heavily restrict movement (especially for long periods), babies lose valuable opportunities to build strength and integrate early reflex patterns.

This isn’t about guilt.
It’s about awareness.

Short-term convenience shouldn’t replace long-term development.

Let babies move 🤍

If you’re unsure whether something is supporting or limiting your baby’s development, DM us “BABY” and we’ll guide you.

your child constantly trips over things or bumps into everything…
it’s easy to think:

“They’re just clumsy.”
“They need to slow down.”
“They’re not paying attention.”

But frequent tripping is often a body awareness issue — not a behavior issue.

When the brain doesn’t clearly register where the body is in space, movement gets messy.
Distances are misjudged.
Steps are off.
Furniture becomes an obstacle course.

Falling is feedback.

And when we support proprioception, motor planning, and sensory integration — confidence follows.

If this sounds familiar, trust your instinct 🤍

Transitions are one of the biggest triggers for meltdowns — not because children are “difficult,” but because transitions activate the nervous system.

When something ends abruptly, the brain registers:
• loss
• uncertainty
• lack of control

And sometimes… anxiety about what’s coming next.

Getting dressed might not be about pajamas.
It might be about school.

When we prepare the shift, offer completion, and share calm energy, we’re not just avoiding meltdowns — we’re building regulation.

Regulated bodies learn better. 🤍

Save this for the next hard transition.

Parents—this matters more than you think 💛

When you respond to your child’s cues…
When you match their energy…
When you play, pause, mirror, smile…

You’re not “just” being present.
You’re literally building their brain.

Serve-and-return interactions:
🧠 strengthen neural connections
💞 increase oxytocin
🛑 calm the stress response
🌱 support emotional regulation, empathy & executive function

And the best part?
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be connected.

Save this for the days you need the reminder ✨YOU are the tool.
