New technology that is currently available at some breast imaging centers. Awaiting results of study by the American College of Radiology, to determine if contrast enhanced mammography will help to improve detection of early breast cancer, especially in women with extremely dense breasts.

If the patient has a high risk for the development of breast cancer and she cannot get an MRI, she can have contrast and has mammography instead.

A new type of mammogram that has shown promise in clinical trials could detect more potential cancers in women with dense breasts. The radiologist who conducted a trial at the Mayo Clinic shows how the new contrast-enhanced mammograms work. NBC News' Anne Thompson reports.
