“Join me on Tuesday, March 30th 2021 at 8pm EST for the first ever Sage and Spoon online Peer Support Group for Black folks struggling with their relationship with food and body image. This group is open to Black folks 18+ of all gender identities, expressions, and sizes.
As a byproduct of living in an Anti-Black and Post-Colonial society many of us have been given images of our bodies through the lens of demonization, objectification, and body terrorism. Not only are we inundated with these oppressive images, we often do not have spaces to talk about our relationships with our bodies or the ways that we nourish ourselves without the perception that our bodies are deeply flawed and that we must change them in order to be valuable. This space is different in that we will unpack and challenge these messages that were given to us by our oppressors, we will actively uplift and support each other around a body image that affirms who we are, and we will focus on nourishing ourselves and support each other throughout the process.
This group is for folks who may have a complicated relationship with their body image which can manifest as negative self image, low self esteem, and overall body dissatifaction. This group is also for those who struggle with their dynamic with food, which can manifest as undereating, eating past comfort, compensatory behaviors, and undernourishment. Any of these symptoms can cause feelings of guilt and shame that contribute to the way that we exist inside of our bodies. This group is not a weight loss group, but a group centered in empowerment, acceptance, and liberation.
