California Right Care Initiative Driving down heart attacks and strokes collaboratively for 15 years @ Rightcare.berkeley.edu

The California Right Care Initiative’s goal is to apply scientific evidence and outcomes improvement strategies to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality among Californians. The effort started with a focus on California’s 25 million managed health plan enrollees, and has now opened up its efforts to spread best practices to all California medical directors, pharmacy directors and quality improvement directors regardless of delivery system to benefit as many patients as possible. The California Department of Managed Healthcare (DMHC) publicly launched the Right Care Initiative with NCQA and the Deans of the UC Berkeley and UCLA Schools of Public Health in March 2008 at the first annual Clinical Quality Improvement Leadership Summit. The Right Care Initiative’s implementation actions include the annual statewide Right Care summit, cardiovascular disease and diabetes research at UC Berkeley, and community-focused efforts to reach Right Care Initiative’s goals in LA, Sacramento, and San Diego through the monthly University of Best Practices consortium.

Patients with pre-existing CVD who have contracted COVID-19 are about 10% more likely to die, compared to only 1% of otherwise healthy patients. Currently, there are no special protocols for higher-risk cardiac patients to prevent COVID-19 exposure. These individuals should be especially careful to follow the CDC recommendations, including frequent hand washing and social distancing!

Initial investigation into COVID-19 focused on its respiratory effects, but a more recent report describes serious cardiovascular complications in people with pre-existing heart disease. How does this underlying condition increase risk for these people?
