Springtime brings beautiful surprises. One of our residents captured this feeling with a haiku that we wanted to share:

Bright smiles on faces
Warmth and freshness in the air
These are springtime signs

This year, we are thankful to be participating in an innovative virtual arts program facilitated by SilverKite Community Arts, LLC and funded by a state grant. Each week they offer two workshops that are designed specifically to meet the needs of elders. Offerings include dance, creative writing, visual arts, and music. It has been so exciting to see our residents get inspired!

Each month on the full moon, our residents gather to form a drum circle. Whenever we can, the circle is outside in our beautiful gardens. There is a spot for everyone to join in. The multi-textured instrumental music that they make lifts our spirits and reminds us that times of transition can bring hope and strength. We don’t like to brag.. but we think we have the best skilled nursing team around! Our nurses and CNAs create a positive healing environment by bringing empathy along with clinical expertise. We are bonded together in a common purpose: to bring the kind of care that we would want for our own loved ones – person centered, compassionate, and empowering. Nurses and CNAs are the backbone of skilled nursing. We are always looking to connect with CNAs, RNAs, LVNs, and RNs who may be a good fit for Chaparral House. New graduates are welcome to apply. Our local community amazes us every year with thoughtful gifts and kind words around the holidays! Our residents want to thank everyone who sent cards, gifts, and decorations including Girl Scout Troup 31235, Shu-Ren International School, the Glamour Girls Foundation, and the volunteers at Postcards of Kindness. We are eagerly awaiting carolers from the Berkeley Community Chamber Singers on Thursday who will sing for residents at their windows. Although we are not yet able to have big celebrations, we feel the holiday love from everyone around us and we are thankful to be here.

Last week our residents enjoyed a birthday celebration with live harp music from Kay. Everyone gathered in the big activities room to watch, and our birthday girl was especially excited! The joy of celebrating together is priceless. Its moments like these that make us appreciate our unique community.

A big THANK YOU to our dietary team who cook up nutritious and delicious meals every day at Chaparral House. The food here is above and beyond what you can get at other skilled nursing facilities. The love and care our dietary team puts into their work has helped many elders regain their strength and vitality during their stay. We always look forward to seeing what culinary creations they have in store for us!
