Case study: Coaching is a catalyzing experience and assists an individual in gaining greater understanding of where they are and where they would prefer to be in areas of their life. With permission and using no names a client came to me frustrated that he had sent 100's of resumes with very few interview opportunities. And in the few interviews he had...he felt he blew it. He felt his nerves got the best of him and he would not have the answers he needed and would go blank. In hindsight he could remember the answers after the interview. He felt if he could be more confident he could succeed in gaining employment. His goal was to move to the downtown area and would like to work there as well. He loved the city life and wanted to be in a vibrant place. He was passionate about his line of work and was a recent graduate with a degree in that field. We started with confidence and discussed the last time he felt confident in his life, we learned a lot through this line of discovery questions and a lot about growing up and bullying. He described times in his life when he was bullied and felt this belief of being less than sure of himself happened there.
Limiting beliefs are typically at the root of our perceived limitations and helping one to see the erroneous perceptions that we take on that we can take with us throughout our life. So in this case this belief was interfering with his confidence and belief in his own abilities.
Working with him to eliminate this belief we used a variety of tools, we used NLP neuro linguistic programming, discovery questions, and taught him Emotional Freedom Technique as a tool for use for nerves in the interim and before the interview.
As homework a re-vamped resume that looked less like a bankers resume and more modern and personable as the field he was entering into required that. This new resume showed his great sense of humor. ( Businesses hire people, not paper)
Within 2 weeks of sending out his new resume he was getting responses and accepted a position, that wasn't quite what he was looking for, however within a week of accepting this new position he was offered a position with a very large well known company in the downtown area he was so interested in working from. He aced multiple interviews and even mentioned he had been working with a coach.
He was hired as a paid intern and within 1 year he was hired as a regular employee. He called me recently-- a few months ago, it's been two years now. He again thanked me so profusely, he loves his company and the work he is doing. While this is gratifying, I let him know that without his persistance in overcoming and pushing through the barriers this new life wouldn't be possible.
While I do not consider myself a career coach, I saw the belief in the self was the challenge, and this is where I feel is at the root of many obstacles we all encounter. This and a resume that was a better reflection of who he is allowed him to gain what he truly desired.
