This week we explored dairy and other calcium-rich foods—and the smoothie bikes were a big hit! 🥛🚲

The kids loved making their own smoothies, and one student even took the initiative to write the recipes down so he could make them at home!

We also learned how calcium helps keep our bones strong, and during yoga, the kids got creative dreaming up their own smoothie combinations. 🍓💪

This week, the kids explored a rainbow of fruits and veggies 🌈🥕🍓

From jicama sticks to gooseberries and pomegranate, many tried new foods for the very first time! Not everyone loved everything—and that’s okay. It can take 10–15 tries for kids to accept a new food 💡

We also played a mystery fruit & veggie game and went on a yoga adventure with The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛🧘‍♀️

Dips like ranch or guacamole can help kids feel more comfortable trying new foods!

Such a fun first week at Pattengill Elementary! 🍎

The kids enjoyed an apple and pear tasting featuring Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, and Asian pear (also called apple pear). They also made their own “apple bagels” with a variety of toppings!

Everyone shared their favorite yoga pose and favorite fruit, and many were adventurous about trying new foods like dried apricots, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds.

We love seeing kids explore new foods and have fun learning about healthy eating! Check out a few photos from our first week. 🍏 🧘‍♀️

We can’t wait to start another 6-week program next week at a new Berkley school — Pattengill! 🎉

We got another “best day ever” while at Woodward Corner Market! 🥰

We are incredibly grateful to the Berkley Education Foundation, Burton Elementary School, and Woodward Corner Market for their generous support of our program.

Thank you for allowing us to use the café space and for giving the kids such a special behind-the-scenes experience with the tour and checkout process!

We are especially thankful to Woodward Corner Market for donating the food and bags for our pantry meal kits. Because of your generosity, our students were able to learn how to build balanced meals on a budget and practice spreading kindness through food.

We truly appreciate our community partners in helping us empower kids to make confident, healthy choices!

💪 Week 5 our Fuel Up Kids learned why protein is so important for growing strong muscles and healthy bodies! We talked about plant-based vs. animal-based proteins, played a fun MyPlate game, practiced yoga 🧘‍♂️ with Nelson the Pigeon, and taste-tested some delicious protein-packed snacks.

The surprise favorite? 🍫 Chocolate fudge cookies made with a secret ingredient… black beans! 🫘

We had such a wonderful time today with an incredible group of women from the P.E.O. Sisterhood 💛 - an international philanthropic organization where women motivate, educate, and celebrate women through education and support.

We talked about simple nutrition habits that support healthy aging, including:
✔️ Eating regularly to support strength & energy
✔️ Pairing foods from 2–3 food groups
✔️ Prioritizing protein, fiber, and fruits & veggies
✔️ Getting enough calcium & vitamin D for bone health ✔️ Thirst decreases as we age — prioritize staying hydrated throughout the day

Small, balanced meals can help protect:
✨ Strength
✨ Energy
✨ Heart health
✨ Independence

Healthy aging isn’t about eating more — it’s about eating smart, more often. Thank you to this amazing group for your engagement, great questions, and for reminding us that wellness is truly a lifelong journey!

This week our Fuel Up kids learned all about calcium-rich foods and how they help keep our bones strong and healthy!

The highlight? 🚲🥤 Smoothie bikes!
Kids powered the blender themselves while creating delicious, nutrient-packed smoothies and sharing their ideas for what makes the perfect blend.

🌾 Grains in action this week! 🐔🧘‍♀️

Inspired by The Little Red Hen, we paired our grain lesson with yoga, label reading, a whole-vs-refined grain snack taste test, and a hands-on “digestion” experiment with bread and OJ to see why whole grains keep us fuller longer.

Popcorn & Cheerios? Whole grain.
Graham crackers? Refined.
Wheat Thins? Whole grain.

The kids even got creative with some fun food art to wrap it up 🎨🥣

This week, our Fuel Up kids explored a rainbow of fruits and veggies, some for the very first time! 🌈
We tasted jicama, dragon fruit, golden kiwi, pomegranate, gooseberries and snap peas, played a mystery fruit & veggie game, and went on a yoga adventure with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Every experience helps kids feel more comfortable exploring new foods. Did you know it can take up to 15 times or more, for a child to accept a new food? 🥒 🍉 🍌 🥕

Year 4 at Burton Elementary! 💚 Two great groups this first week!
Huge thanks to Burton and the Berkley Education Foundation for supporting Fuel Up with Friends.

This program started when my girls were in elementary school and now they’re back as NHS and Junior NHS volunteers. Full-circle moments like this make us appreciate how far we’ve come and feel grateful for all the kids we’ve met along the way. 🍎
