💪 Week 5 our Fuel Up Kids learned why protein is so important for growing strong muscles and healthy bodies! We talked about plant-based vs. animal-based proteins, played a fun MyPlate game, practiced yoga 🧘‍♂️ with Nelson the Pigeon, and taste-tested some delicious protein-packed snacks.

The surprise favorite? 🍫 Chocolate fudge cookies made with a secret ingredient… black beans! 🫘

We can’t believe we’re heading into our final session — it’s been such a fun and energizing few weeks with these amazing kids 💚

We had such a wonderful time today with an incredible group of women from the P.E.O. Sisterhood 💛 - an international philanthropic organization where women motivate, educate, and celebrate women through education and support.

We talked about simple nutrition habits that support healthy aging, including:
✔️ Eating regularly to support strength & energy
✔️ Pairing foods from 2–3 food groups
✔️ Prioritizing protein, fiber, and fruits & veggies
✔️ Getting enough calcium & vitamin D for bone health ✔️ Thirst decreases as we age — prioritize staying hydrated throughout the day

Small, balanced meals can help protect:
✨ Strength
✨ Energy
✨ Heart health
✨ Independence

Healthy aging isn’t about eating more — it’s about eating smart, more often. Thank you to this amazing group for your engagement, great questions, and for reminding us that wellness is truly a lifelong journey!

This week our Fuel Up kids learned all about calcium-rich foods and how they help keep our bones strong and healthy!

The highlight? 🚲🥤 Smoothie bikes!
Kids powered the blender themselves while creating delicious, nutrient-packed smoothies and sharing their ideas for what makes the perfect blend.

🌾 Grains in action this week! 🐔🧘‍♀️

Inspired by The Little Red Hen, we paired our grain lesson with yoga, label reading, a whole-vs-refined grain snack taste test, and a hands-on “digestion” experiment with bread and OJ to see why whole grains keep us fuller longer.

Popcorn & Cheerios? Whole grain.
Graham crackers? Refined.
Wheat Thins? Whole grain.

The kids even got creative with some fun food art to wrap it up 🎨🥣

This week, our Fuel Up kids explored a rainbow of fruits and veggies, some for the very first time! 🌈
We tasted jicama, dragon fruit, golden kiwi, pomegranate, gooseberries and snap peas, played a mystery fruit & veggie game, and went on a yoga adventure with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Every experience helps kids feel more comfortable exploring new foods. Did you know it can take up to 15 times or more, for a child to accept a new food? 🥒 🍉 🍌 🥕

Year 4 at Burton Elementary! 💚 Two great groups this first week!
Huge thanks to Burton and the Berkley Education Foundation for supporting Fuel Up with Friends.

This program started when my girls were in elementary school and now they’re back as NHS and Junior NHS volunteers. Full-circle moments like this make us appreciate how far we’ve come and feel grateful for all the kids we’ve met along the way. 🍎

That’s a wrap on Fuel Up with Friends in Livonia! 🎉
We ended our program by learning about plant-based vs. animal-based protein, playing a MyPlate food group game, practicing yoga with Nelson the pigeon, tasting a variety of protein rich snacks, and even trying chocolate fudge cookies made with a secret ingredient—black beans! 🫘

This week we explored the grain food group 🌾 and paired our lesson with Little Red Hen–inspired yoga 🐔🧘‍♀️
The kids learned the difference between whole vs. refined grains, practiced reading labels, and discovered why whole grains give our bodies lasting energy.

We also tasted grain snacks guessing if they were a whole or refined grain (popcorn, Kix, graham crackers & Wheat Thins) and did a fun digestion experiment using bread + apple cider. The kids observed how whole grains break down more slowly and help us feel fuller longer.

✨ Mystery Bag Game — the whole room chanting “AVO-CADO!” before the big reveal.
✨ Taste-the-Rainbow — bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, guacamole, pomegranate, even yellow dragonfruit!

🚲🥛 Smoothie Bike Day! 🍓
This week in our after-school program we explored dairy and other calcium-rich foods then the kids hopped on the smoothie bike to put nutrition into action! We also learned about different body parts and bones during yoga, tying it all together with movement.

A question we hear a lot: “Does dairy cause inflammation?”
For most people, evidence shows that dairy does not cause inflammation and may even have a neutral or mild anti-inflammatory effect. If you’d like to learn more, check out a great article (link in bio) written and reviewed by Registered Dietitians.

Our smoothie bike creations today:
✨ Pumpkin Pie Smoothies with vanilla yogurt, pumpkin puree and milk
✨ Frozen Banana “Milkshakes” made with lactose-free chocolate milk, handful of spinach and a dash of cinnamon

Strong bones + fun movement + delicious, calcium-rich foods = a win in every way.

Healthy doesn’t look the same for everyone.
It’s shaped by your access, your resources, and your health needs.

Nourishing is different.
It’s about pulling together foods that support you whether they’re fresh, frozen, canned, or from your pantry. It’s doing the best you can with what’s available, without shame or comparison.

NPR recently highlighted helpful ways to find low-cost and free food when money is tight. Link in bio.
