RUFUS UPDATE! We know that many of you have grown attached to our resident roof-cat, who tamed us almost a year ago and has been living a semi-pampered life in the kitty-condo we built for him across the parking lot. As the animal lovers we are, we have known for a while now that he deserved more care than we could offer him living outside in an abandoned building. So, with the frigid temperatures and the impending snowstorm, we knew it was time for the Rufus Rescue. Last night, being the wild and feral creature he is (not), he walked easily into the cat carrier where we had placed some yummy treats. He was cared for overnight by our very own foster-mom extraordinaire Amber, where you can see by the pictures below that he demonstrated how aggressive and afraid of humans he is (also, not!). Here he is being forced to curl up cozily on Amber's lap, giving her purrs and kisses, without a care in the world.

Today, he was brought into the Humane Society, where he will be examined and given any medical care he needs. Once he's medically cleared, we will all be involved in making sure he finds a safe, warm and loving home. Several of us here are already vying for the honor -- me included!

While many of our clients have enjoyed their Rufus sightings and pettings and those loud and insistent meows, we know that the best and safest thing for him is to be well cared for in a home with a family who loves him. We will keep you posted on the next steps! All of us here at Paragon, including Rufus, appreciate the care you've shown him at your visits over the past months β™₯

Below is a list of resources if you or anyone you know are facing food insecurity this month. This list is an edited excerpt from an article by "Those Nerdy Girls."

"Update: A federal judge ruled that emergency funds can be used for SNAP, but it’s not yet clear if this applies to all states or only those involved in the lawsuit. The decision could also be appealed or delayed. Even if funds are released, it will take time for them to reach families. That’s why these resources are still important, and why we should keep helping our community.

Do you know how you are going to feed your family this month?
If you don’t know how you are going to feed your family this month, this post has a list of resources you can look into today.
If you do have enough food for the month, please share with your neighbors and your wider community.
We all do better, when we all do better.--Senator Paul Wellstone"

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

β€’ Baby formula: https://freeformula.exchange/
β€’ Discounts at grocery stores: https://flashfood.com/
β€’ If you have to choose between food and medicine, check with your provider or pharmacy on how to request medications from the pharmaceutical companies

β€’ If your situation is making you feel hopeless or in despair, help is available. Please call 211, or 988 for the national crisis lifeline.

If you are adequately fed and housed, share these resources and consider helping in other ways:

β€’ Donate money to your local food pantry. Even a few dollars add up. Donate food if that’s easier. But food pantries know how to stretch their donated dollars. Please also check with them about what they actually need.
β€’ Organize a food drive at your work, school, or other community location. But connect to your local pantry to find out what food items they need and can accept.
β€’ Make a meal and drop it off to a family you know is in need.
β€’ Ask your child’s school if you can drop off extra snacks for them to distribute.
β€’ Volunteer to cook for/at a local community meal.
β€’ Call your representatives and tell them you need them to act on healthcare and food access. Food AND healthcare should be part of our basic human rights. Text SIGN PKJTCO to 50409 to send an email to your representatives.
β€’ No Kid Hungry has a tool to write to your representative.
