If a death has occurred, call us 24/7 at (603) 752-1344. Walters & Co.

Established in 1893 by Arthur W. Walters, our funeral home has been a pillar of service and support for area families for over a century. Since its founding, we have remained committed to providing compassionate care to those in need during life’s most difficult moments. In 1928, Bradford S. Parker joined A.W. and later purchased the business from Arthur Walters. Mr. Parker then formed a partnership with G. Harold Holmes, and together, they relocated the funeral home to its current location at 180 Hillside Avenue in Berlin. In 1966, Bertrand E. Bryant of Colebrook, NH, acquired the business. Alongside his wife, Beverly, Bert dedicated many years to serving the community with professionalism and care. Recognizing the need for expanded services, the Bryants acquired the Wilson Funeral Home business of Gorham and, in 1977, constructed a new facility at 1 Promenade Street, Gorham, which opened in 1978. Bert’s son, B. Edward Bryant, joined the family business in 1981, continuing the tradition of service. In 1995, Ed and his wife, Laurie, became the owners, ensuring that the funeral home remained locally owned and family-operated. As consumer preference for cremation increased over the years, the Bryants opened an on-site crematorium at the Berlin location in 2015. With more families choosing cremation, this addition ensured that loved ones remained under our direct care throughout the entire process, upholding our unwavering commitment to dignity, respect, and trust. The family legacy continued in 2016 when Ed and Laurie’s son, David, joined the funeral home following his graduation from FINE Mortuary College, marking the third generation of Bryant family funeral directors. In 2020, the Fleury-Patry Funeral Home, formerly located on High Street, merged with our firm. Originally founded as Fleury Funeral Homes by Oscar F. Fleury in 1936, the firm served families across multiple generations, continuing through Oscar’s son-in-law, Raymond N. Patry, and later his grandson, Michael A. Patry. After Mr. Patry's retirement, the funeral home underwent several ownership transitions before ultimately returning to family ownership under the Bryant family, ensuring the continued legacy of compassionate and dedicated service. By bringing Fleury-Patry under our stewardship, we have ensured that families in our community continue to receive dignified and affordable services. Today, families previously served by Fleury-Patry Funeral Home are welcomed at our Berlin and Gorham locations, where we honor their traditions while offering the highest level of professional care. Today, we remain a funeral home that has earned the trust of generations in our communities and throughout the region. We remain steadfast in our mission: to serve the families of Berlin, Gorham, and the surrounding communities with the highest level of compassion, professionalism, and dedication. We are proud to be family-owned and family-trusted.

Grief doesn’t stop the day of the funeral, and you may feel a variety of emotions, including sadness, confusion, anger, loneliness, or even guilt. No matter what challenges you face each day, an important part of the grieving process is self-care. Be kind to yourself and do the little things for yourself, like drink water, exercise, meditate, or whatever brings you joy.

Beverley A Higgins

Berlin —— Beverley Anne Higgins (Wilson) 89, passed peacefully on April 4, 2026, in a moment of quiet love and comfort held in her daughter’s embrace.

Born January 14, 1937, in Valley Forge, Quebec, Beverley was raised in a time where resilience and generosity weren’t taught, they were lived. She often spoke of her childhood with gratitude: a home filled with warmth, a mother who baked and knitted for others, and a family that always found a way to give, even in uncertain times.

Though she once planned to pursue science, life had other plans. Encouraged by close friends, she chose nursing, a decision she never once questioned. After earning her cap from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1958, she stepped into a career that would become her life’s calling for more than 50 years.

Beverley wasn’t just a nurse; she was the kind of nurse people remembered.

She led with skill, confidence, and instinct. From head nurse roles in surgery and trauma units to occupational health and community care, she made an impact everywhere she went. She solved problems others couldn’t, improved systems that mattered, and cared deeply for every patient she encountered. She believed nursing wasn’t just a job, you had to want it. And she did.

She was fiercely honest, quick with her thoughts and never one to sugarcoat anything…and those who knew her best will smile at just how blunt she could be! She told it like it was and if you knew her, you wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

But that same woman would give you the shirt off her back without hesitation. She loved deeply, showed up fully, and never looked the other way when someone needed help.

She met her husband, William “Billy” Higgins, on a ski trip to Jay Peak, Vermont. In true Beverley fashion, she didn’t waste any time. After seeing him just four times, she proposed to him, and the rest was history. Together, they built a life rooted in love, strength, and family.

That was Beverley… decisive, fearless, and never one to wait around when she knew what she wanted.

Outside of her work, she lived fully and unapologetically. She was a devoted Boston sports fan, a lover of sunshine and sandy beaches, and someone who could spend hours tending to her plants and gardens. She loved romance novels, word searches, and long card games — especially Euchre with her family up in Canada. She cherished time at Cape Cod with her family, and found joy in simple things: a good game, a warm day, a full house.

She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society, enjoyed spending time at the Holiday Center, and volunteered at the Guardian Angel Thrift Store…always staying connected and giving back.

She loved her pets. She loved to travel. But above everything - she loved her family.

Beverley was predeceased by her husband William E. Higgins; her parents Richard-Wray and Madge (Harris) Wilson; and her sisters Marjorie Pickup (late Albert), Joyce Branchaud (late Robert), and Dawn McManamy.

She is survived by her sister Peggie Jarvo (Wilson); her daughter Amy Higgins; and her son Andrew Higgins. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Ron Langevin (wife Sarah), Laura Langevin, Krystina Costine, Alyssa Higgins and her beloved great-grandchildren: Cooper Cascadden, Olivia, Ava, and Leona Langevin, and Rylan Cheshier, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Per Beverley’s request, there will be no calling hours or services. Instead, those who knew her are encouraged to honor her in their own way - by helping someone in need, speaking honestly (just as she always did), or simply sitting in the sun and appreciating a quiet moment.

Because that’s how she lived. Full of strength. Full of love. And always on her own terms.

And if you’re ever unsure what to say… just say it like she would.

The Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Online guestbook at www.bryantfuneralhome.net

Our Story

Established in 1893 by Arthur W. Walters, the funeral home has served area families continuously since that time. In 1928, Bradford S. Parker became affiliated with A.W. Walters & Co. Mr. Parker purchased the business from Arthur Walters and later formed a partnership with G. Harold Holmes and they moved to the present location at 180 Hillside Avenue in Berlin. Bertrand E. Bryant of Colebrook, NH purchased the business in 1966. Bert, along with his wife Beverly operated the business for many years following. (Photo: Bev & Bert July 2015) In 1978, the Gorham location was constructed at 1 Promenade Street. Bert's son B. Edward Bryant became affiliated with the funeral home in 1981. In 1995, Ed and his wife Laurie became the owners of the business, with it remaining as a local family owned and operated funeral home. In 2015, the Bryant's opened an on-site crematorium at their Berlin funeral home to further serve families. As more families are turning to cremation as a means of disposition, the Bryant's decided to open an onsite crematory. By doing so, families know that their loved one never leaves our care. From the first call to the conclusion of services, we oversee the process every step of the way, ensuring the utmost level of care that has been entrusted to us. In 2016, Ed and Laurie were joined by their son David following his graduation from FINE Mortuary College, representing the third generation of Bryant family funeral directors. As a funeral home that has held the community’s trust for many years, our staff is here to serve the families of Berlin, Gorham and the surrounding communities with the utmost care and compassion along with the finest of service.
