It seems as though the Church is suffering from an identity crisis; we don’t know who we are. The Scriptures say that we are a royal priesthood, a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9), but Christians are taught that they are sinful. We are the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21) but Christians think they are sinners. We have been given a new heart (Ezek. 36:26), but how many times have you heard in church on Sunday that our hearts are wicked and can’t be trusted?
The Book of Hebrews is crystal clear concerning Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (and our participation in that event- Gal. 2:20) that we have been completely forgiven, one time for ALL sin, and yet Christians are taught that forgiveness is conditional (if your forgive others, you will be forgiven) and it’s progressive leaving them in an endless cycle of sin-confess-seek forgiveness-repentance. HERESY!
Paul’s letters paint a beautiful picture of identity for us; they are clear, concise, and consistent. If he were here today and saw what most Christians believe, he would say exactly what he said to the church in Galatia: “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel, which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! (Galatians 1:6)
