Can Bodywork Reduce Digital Dementia?

In this week’s Technique Tuesday newsletter, blog post, and demonstration video we discuss digital dementia and its relationship to poor posture.

Erik was interested in the work of neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer, who defined digital dementia as the overuse of technology resulting in a breakdown of cognitive abilities. Symptoms include a lack of focus, visual disturbances, depression, poor balance, protective muscle guarding and more.

The conditions that produce digital dementia – hours sitting at computer screens, lack of exercise, and poor body biomechanics, also contribute to poor posture. While manual therapists typically think of poor posture as a “tissue issue,” Erik reminds us to identify nervous system responses to sensory input.

Read the blog and watch the demonstration video. Learn to consider nervous system factors related to the vestibular system, gaze stabilization and cerebellar weakness when assessing clients with poor posture.

Most massage therapists have made the mistake of chasing pain around a client’s body. One week the client reports that pain arises in the left hip, while the next week, the client reports pain in the right knee.
