While federal $$$ for medical research is falling short, the AGA Research Foundation is committed to being the bridge for innovative GI research. In 2025 alone, we awarded $2.4 million in research funding and added $400,000 in pilot awards to support researchers at risk of losing momentum due to federal cuts.

We are called to fund even more GI researchers in 2026, but we need your help. Please consider a gift to the AGA Research Foundation this holiday season. Your gift is 100% tax deductible: https://ow.ly/Frt450XMynL

Season’s greetings! ❄️

We’re reflecting on 2025 in gratitude: from awarding the inaugural Beacon of Hope Awards to deserving women in GI during Digestive Disease Week® (DDW®) to walking the halls of Congress during Advocacy Day as we fight to affect positive change for GI care. We all came together to make a difference: researchers, clinicians, APPs, and fellows from all walks of life.

We wish you and yours a wonderful and restful holiday season and a happy new year ahead.

AGA's office will be closed Dec. 25, 2025-Jan. 1, 2026, for the holidays. The AGA GI Patient Center (patient.gastro.org) is always available to answer questions about digestive health conditions.

📢 New clinical practice update
Advances in endoscopic techniques are reshaping how clinicians manage early (T1) colorectal cancer. ✨

Key insights:
☑️ Management must balance metastasis risk with surgical morbidity
☑️ Current histologic criteria are imperfect — most “high-risk” cases show no nodal disease
☑️ En-bloc resection via ESD may be diagnostic and potentially curative
☑️ EFTR may be an alternative when ESD is not feasible
☑️ More research is needed to refine selection criteria and improve predictive models

A new review in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology emphasizes that while steroids can help induce remission, they aren’t effective for long-term maintenance, and extended use can cause significant harm.

Key points:
☑️ Steroids are often overused in IBD care.
☑️ They help with short-term symptom control but not remission maintenance.
☑️ Use should be limited to under two months, serving only as a bridge to safer, targeted therapies.

Do you experience uncomfortable GI symptoms such as having food stuck in your throat, trouble swallowing, or an upset stomach or nausea? During GERD Awareness Week, we’re here to remind you that you’re not alone.

These symptoms impact everyone differently and can lead to different diagnoses. For some people, this can lead to being diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

For others experiencing these symptoms, it could be eosinophilic esophagitis, or EoE, which has similar symptoms. EoE is believed to be caused by an allergic reaction triggered by different foods and causes swelling of the esophagus, which makes it hard to eat and swallow comfortably.

Take the quiz about symptoms associated with EoE to understand where to start your health journey and get connected to resources: https://ow.ly/i78350Xt9yI.
