Travel-related foot and ankle swelling is common and usually benign, but it’s preventable. When you sit for long periods, blood and fluid pool in the lower extremities. Contributing factors include high salt intake, dehydration, and some medications.

Practical steps to recommend:
- Encourage movement: stand/walk every 30–60 minutes and perform ankle pumps during travel.
- Recommend graduated compression socks for long flights/drives.
- Advise hydration and reducing sodium intake before and during travel.

Refer for clinical evaluation if swelling is sudden, painful, asymmetric, or linked with cardiopulmonary symptoms.

Share with patients to help make travel healthier and more comfortable this holiday season!

Key details:
• Applies only to Medicare Part B beneficiaries
• Maintains defined coverage criteria and documentation requirements

These updates may have significant implications for clinical decision-making, documentation practices, and patient access to care. APMA encourages members to review the product lists carefully and stay informed as implementation approaches.

Big thanks to APMA member John Steinberg, DPM—featured in USA Today Careers in Healthcare! 🎉

Dr. Steinberg’s article explains why podiatry is an in-demand surgical specialty. This is a proud moment for our profession—and a powerful recruiting tool for students considering surgical careers.

👏 Thank you, Dr. Steinberg for elevating podiatry and demonstrating the surgical opportunities our field offers.
