In addition to National Foot Health Awareness Month, April is National Minority Health Month. These two observances are closely related as we recognize the importance of equitable care and the role podiatrists play in supporting communities of color, who are disproportionately affected by diabetes. From early detection to ongoing treatment, foot and ankle physicians help prevent complications and protect quality of life.

That is why APMA is championing the Diabetes Foot Health Access and Modernization Act, which would reduce delays in care for therapeutic shoes under Medicare and help ensure Medicaid coverage parity for podiatrists.

APMA members and the public are encouraged to explore our new resource page to get involved and help move this important legislation forward here: https://www.apma.org/diabetesfootbill

APMA's new legislative priority is the Diabetes Foot Health Access and Modernization Act, which would modernize outdated Medicare documentation requirements, which cause significant delays in care for therapeutic shoes, and establish Medicaid coverage parity for podiatrists.

To help support the advancement of this legislation and facilitate member advocacy, APMA created a new web page with information on bill co-leads, endorsing organizations, press releases, and bill text.

The page also includes a toolkit with materials members can easily use to advocate for this legislation with lawmakers. Get started today and urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the bill!

For many people living with gout, the hardest part is not just the pain, it is the journey to getting the right diagnosis.

In this powerful story, one patient shares how years of misdiagnosis delayed proper treatment. APMA Trustee David Schweibish, DPM, also highlights the important role podiatrists play in recognizing symptoms to guide patients toward relief. It is a good reminder that awareness is not just a buzzword. It can genuinely change outcomes.

Happy National Exercise Day! April is also Foot Health Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to take a closer look at what you are putting on your feet and how it supports your overall health.

When you see the APMA Seal of Acceptance or Seal of Approval, it means that product has been carefully reviewed by a panel of APMA member podiatrists who evaluate the product for quality, safety, and effectiveness allowing normal foot function and promoting good foot health.

So what is the difference?

The Seal of Acceptance is awarded to footwear, socks, insoles, materials, and equipment that support healthy feet.

The Seal of Approval is given to therapeutic products such as lotions, deodorizers, wound care treatments, medical devices, and medications. Some of these may be available over the counter, while others require a prescription.

Small choices add up. The products you use every day can have a real impact on your comfort, mobility, and long-term foot health.

Harry S. Truman depended on podiatrists to alleviate chronic foot pain, especially after his presidency. The late Robert R. Shemwell was a lifelong APMA member who treated the Trumans from 1958 until their deaths. His son, also an APMA member, Dr. Shemwell, spoke to APMA News about his father’s love of podiatry and the role he played in former President Truman’s care.
