As we conclude Black History Month, APMA is honored to feature a true legend of podiatric medicine: Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM.
Known as the "Father of Diabetic Foot Care," Dr. Harkless’ impact isn't just measured in the thousands of limbs he saved, but in the culture of learning he built at the Texas Diabetes Institute and beyond. For Dr. Harkless, podiatry is more than a profession; it is a ministry proven by the results in others' lives.
In his own words: "Service is the price we pay for the space we occupy. Through service, I learned about the 'Intersection of Interest' where academia, government, and the community come together to solve problems. This was shared with everyone through love."
From his role as the founding dean at Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine to his advocacy at the local and national levels, Dr. Harkless has shown us that when ambition is rooted in purpose, success follows.
Thank you, Dr. Harkless, for your tireless service and for inspiring generations of DPMs to "be, behave, and become" the leaders our patients need.
