Signs of Rotator Cuff Tear
A rotator cuff tear happens when one of the shoulder tendons is damaged—often causing pain, weakness, and trouble using your arm the way you normally do.

Common symptoms include:
✅ Pain reaching overhead or lifting, getting dressed, putting things on a shelf
✅ Night pain especially when lying on that shoulder
✅ Weakness lifting the arm or rotating it (feels heavy or unreliable)
✅ Pain with reaching behind your back
✅ Sometimes: clicking or a “catching” feeling

Shoulder pain can be stubborn. The right solutions from non-invasive activity modifications, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy to injection options, may be recommended

If symptoms are significant/persistent or not improving surgical repair may be recommended, especially for active patients or larger tears

Fortunately, many shoulder injuries improve with the right plan—and the first step is knowing what you’re dealing with so you can get Back to Better. 💙

🦶 Rolled your ankle?
Ankle sprains are common — but the right early steps matter.

In the first 24–72 hours:
✅ Rest and elevate
✅ Gentle motion as tolerated
✅ Avoid aggressively “testing it” (that can delay healing)

When to get checked:
If you can’t bear weight, swelling is severe, bruising spreads quickly, or pain isn’t improving, it’s time to be evaluated to rule out a fracture or a more significant ligament injury.

How OrthoBethesda can help:
At your visit, our team can assess stability, check for fracture risk, and get you a clear plan — which may include imaging if needed, bracing, guided rehab/physical therapy, and a safe return-to-activity timeline so you don’t re-injure it.

⚡️ Is it Sciatica or back pain?
Here’s the quick difference - It may be SCIATICA (nerve irritation) if you have:

✅ Pain that travels from the low back into the buttock, thigh, or below the knee
✅ Tingling, numbness, or burning down the leg
✅ Pain that follows a line/path (not just one sore spot)
✅ Worse with coughing/sneezing or sitting for long periods

It may be MUSCLE/JOINT/BACK pain if:
✅ Pain stays mostly in the low back (sometimes in the buttock, but not far down the leg)
✅ Feels tight/sore and improves with changing positions or gentle movement
✅ No numbness/tingling/weakness

The good news is most cases improve with the right treatment plan — the key is figuring out what’s driving your symptoms so you’re not guessing. That’s how OrthoBethesda gets you Back to Better.

“I have a partial rotator cuff tear… does golfing make it worse?” ⛳️

Dr. Craig A. Miller: “No. Life deteriorates your rotator cuff. Time deteriorates your rotator cuff.”

Translation: golfing isn’t automatically “doing damage.” If you feel good swinging, get out there and play.

If pain is increasing, your swing is changing, or you’re losing strength—get it checked at OrthoBethesda today.

🦶 Heel pain in the morning?
That sharp “first-step” pain that eases as you move is a classic sign of plantar fasciitis—irritation of the tissue along the bottom of your foot.

Quick wins to try this week:
✅ Calf stretching (2–3x/day)
✅ Supportive shoes (yes, even at home—skip bare feet)
✅ Ease up on high-impact for 1–2 weeks (swap in biking/swimming if you can)
✅ Roll your foot on a frozen water bottle or ball for 1–2 minutes

If it’s lingering, don’t “push through.” Our foot & ankle specialists can help you pinpoint the cause and get you back to comfortable movement.

🎾Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): What it is & what helps
Tennis elbow isn’t just for tennis. It’s irritation of the tendons on the outside of your elbow from repetitive gripping and lifting. Over time, the tendon gets overloaded and becomes painful. 🦾

Common symptoms
✅ Pain/tenderness on the outer elbow
✅ Pain lifting a mug, shaking hands, turning a doorknob, or carrying bags
✅ Weak grip or pain with typing/mouse use
✅ Worse with repetitive lifting or wrist extension (palm down)

What Can Help:
✅ Reduce the aggravating activity temporarily (don’t “push through”)
✅ Use a counterforce strap or wrist brace can take stress off the tendon
✅ Strengthening exercises (often eccentric wrist/forearm work) rebuild tendon tolerance
✅ Gradually return to lifting/sports with smarter technique

Before you do anything, you should consult with a shoulder specialist to confirm diagnosis and create a treatment plan for recovery. 💙

Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) - What to Know
Frozen shoulder is when the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, causing pain + a gradual loss of motion—often making it hard to reach overhead or behind your back.

Common signs
✅ Increasing stiffness over time (not just soreness)
✅ Night pain, especially when sleeping on that side
✅ Trouble reaching up, across, or behind your back (bra strap/seatbelt)

👩 Does it affect women more than men?
Yes, frozen shoulder is more common in women, most often between ages 40–60. It’s also more common in people with diabetes or thyroid conditions.

How OrthoBethesda can help!
The right plan can shorten the shoulder pain struggle, often with targeted physical therapy, guided mobility work, and pain-relief options when appropriate. Call the shoulder experts today at OrthoBethesda.

Knee Arthritis – Signs It’s Time to Get Checked
If knee pain is changing how you walk, climb stairs, or get through your day, it’s worth getting checked—especially if you notice some of the following symptoms:

1️⃣ Pain with stairs or getting up from a chair
Knee arthritis often shows up as an achy pain with stairs (especially going down), squatting, or standing up after sitting.
2️⃣ Stiffness after sitting
That “rusty knee” feeling when you first stand—then it loosens after a few steps—can be a classic pattern.
3️⃣ Swelling that comes and goes
If your knee slightly swells after activity or feels tight/full, it can be a sign of joint irritation.

Luckily, you don’t have to “live with it.” Many people improve with activity modifications, targeted strengthening/physical therapy, anti-inflammatory options, and other non-surgical treatments.

If symptoms persist, we can also discuss advanced procedures and the best next step for your goals.
