We all need a reminder to engage in self care and to actively choose to take care of ourselves. Take a minute to truly consider what will fill your cup right now. What activity would help you out the most?

Then let’s dedicate some time to that activity. Look at your schedule and find time for whatever that thing is. Let’s find time for self-care!

“No one cares about me”

When I hear this statement in sessions, I immediately take a step back and recognize how much hurt is in this one sentence. So many people share this thought, this idea that they are alone in the world. My first question is always, “Is that true?”

Being alone is the physical state, while feeling lonely is the emotional state. When this sentiment comes up, take the time to really consider what is true and realistic, not what this myth is trying to have you believe.

However, when this thought comes up for you, I want YOU to take a step back too. Consider, even if no one cares about you, do YOU care about YOU? Do you have self-love and self-acceptance when that thought is turned inward? Find time to care for yourself, and that in turn, will create self security.

“I honor myself, I respect myself, I love myself”

This simple affirmation can open up so much space for growth in one’s self. This can be a boundary to uphold for yourself. These three elements can become the key foundation on which we can thrive.

For a challenge, try and say these three affirmations to yourself everyday in the mirror. Watch and see how that might change your mindset to a more positive self-esteem.

“I can't do anything right”

The ways that we talk to ourselves mean everything. It might not be this exact statement, but negative self-talk can look like so many different things. It can be putting ourselves down, being irrational with ourselves, or diving into low self esteem.

But let’s consider how important self-talk is. As RuPaul famously says, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?” Let’s be honest with ourselves, if we keep talking negatively to ourselves, we are not giving the same kindness we want from others.

Take the time today to consider self-compassion. Focus on positive self-talk. Let’s work on being there for ourselves.

“Do it scared.”

Sometimes, things are really really hard. Sometimes, we don’t want to do the thing. Sometimes, we have to do something that is scary.

But still, you have to do it scared. Whatever is plaguing your mind, it’s there for a reason. That thought has some sort of importance. So we have to look into it, we have to be curious about it, and we have to do it scared.

Even when we are afraid, even when we are miserable, even when we are tired. Sometimes, we just have to do it. So do it scared.

“This can’t be fixed”

As therapists, our job isn’t to fix you. It’s not to give you the answers and send you on the way. Therapy only provides a safe, dedicated space for you to find your own answers.

Our spiral thinking can get in the way. Sometimes all we can think about is how to fix our problems. Instead, let’s reframe our fear. When we trust in ourselves, we are allowing ourselves to feel that emotion and come to terms with it.

Whatever it is, it may not be able to be fixed, and that’s okay. Our goals can shift and we can put our focus on where it actually matters.
