During the Los Angeles fires, Access Healthcare Associates partnered with Wendy Glickman, a Krispy Kreme franchise owner, to deliver 10 dozen donuts to community partners, making a difference.

From the Woodland Hills Fire Dept. 🚒 to senior communities like Meadowbrook Agoura Hills 🏡 and Atria Pacific Palisades 🏡 , these small gestures are a reminder that even in tough times, kindness can bring smiles.

🏥 How can the healthcare sector manage the impact of long Covid?

“Long Covid is the term used to describe an array of symptoms that can last for months or longer after the initial coronavirus infection. The researchers identified post-Covid health problems in many different organ systems, including the heart, lungs and kidneys.”

The amount of patients affected by long Covid is even higher in patients 65 and older: approximately one in four.

🧪 Knowing the potential long-term and widespread consequences of Covid presses the urgency to develop more diagnosing tools and resources needed to support these patients.

💊 Wondering about Paxlovid efficacy?
Studies are showing that Paxlovid reduces COVID-19 risks among senior adults. Deaths and hospitalizations were significantly reduced in older patients treated with Paxlovid by over 70 percent, regardless of vaccination status.

🔬 While there have been mixed results about its effectiveness for individuals under the age of 65, continued research over time will help shed more light on these COVID-19 treatments.

Among patients under 65, however, the drug made little difference in hospitalization or death rates.

More than half of cancers diagnosed in the US occur in individuals over the age of 65. So why are they underrepresented in critical clinical research trials?

A large part of the problem is the exclusivity, accessibility, and awareness of these clinical research trials. Study criteria can exclude individuals with certain characteristics such as age and health condition that contribute to underrepresentation. Additionally, the lack of education and awareness of these trials for older patients reduces participation and patient engagement in research.

It is imperative that researchers, science institutions, and healthcare professionals bridge the gap in communication and overcome ageism in order to advance research for older patients.
