Play is serious business when it comes to your child's health and development!

The American Academy of Pediatrics has published a report detailing how playing is the key to building thriving brains, bodies and social bonds. Play can improve children's abilities to plan, organize, get along with others, and regulate emotions.

A prescription for play - at My 1st Clinic, every child receives a Lego set to play (and take home) while Dr. Pagi listen's to their parents. We can learn a lot about your child by observing how they play!

Why do babies need newborn hearing screens?

One of the most important ways babies learn is through hearing and listening. One to 3 of every 1,000 babies are born deaf or hard of hearing. Identifying babies with hearing loss early on allows us to provide early intervention services that can make a big impact on the baby's communication skills as they get older and progress in their development.

It is fascinating to watch babies find their voice. Parents are often unsure what to expect at the early stages and express concern about their baby's early verbal communication development.

Here is a summary of what a parent can expect and how they can help (and click the link below for more information):
"At about two months, your infant may begin cooing and repeating some vowel sounds (ah-ah-ah, ooh-ooh-ooh). Over the first four to six months, imitate their cooing, while adding simple words and phrases to your “conversations." It's easy to fall into a habit of baby talk, but you should try mixing your conversations with adult language and eventually phase out the baby talk. During early infancy, you should also read to your baby, even if you think they doesn't comprehend.

By four months, your infant will babble routinely, often amusing themselves for long periods by producing strange new sounds (muh-muh, bah-bah). They'll also be more sensitive to your tone of voice and the emphasis you put on words or phrases. "

If you are concerned about your child's verbal development, let your pediatrician know, they may need to have their hearing screen repeated!

Summer is a great time to learn to ride a bike!
But don't forget to wear your helmet!

Helmets are the most important protective gear when riding a bike. We always tell our patients - we can probably fix your arm, but it is much harder to fix your head!

Please make sure that your child is wearing a properly fitting helmet to protect that brain inside their head!
