Every trip to Ethiopia brings its own set of challenges with complex cases, limited resources and the emotional weight that comes with caring for patients who have been waiting years for help. But standing beside a teammate who meets every obstacle with skill and compassion changes everything.

Dr. Le is that person for me. Her dedication, steadiness and heart elevate every mission and make it possible for us to deliver the care our patients deserve. With support like hers, we are able to push through the difficult moments and truly make a lasting difference.

Reflecting on this case from our trip to Ethiopia ✨ It is always remarkable to see how transformative the first stage of microtia reconstruction can be. The ability to create an ear framework from a patient’s own rib cartilage is one of the most rewarding parts of this work, and watching it settle and heal over time is truly amazing.

Our hope is that we will be able to welcome her back for the second stage of the process, where we can elevate the ear and refine its natural contour. Seeing patients progress through each step of their reconstruction is a privilege, and we remain grateful for every opportunity to help them move closer to the confidence and comfort they deserve.

It’s been a few days since we’ve come back from our mission in Ethiopia and our hearts remain full from the time we spent there. From the incredible staff, to the patients and their families, we we’re shown nothing but love and appreciation.

I wish we could say these trips become easier over time but that’s hardly the case. Every trip brings something new, and sometimes more difficult than the last, but we try our best to take care of as many people as we can during our time there.

Some cases stick with us longer than others but we are eternally grateful for the opportunity to help those in need.

Day ✌🏼 of surgeries in Ethiopia: Today we began our schedule with a young female patient born with microtia, a congenital condition in which the external ear does not fully develop, as shown in slide number one.

Using cartilage harvested from one of her ribs and a detailed diagram I drew of her fully developed ear, I was able to sculpt and position a new ear framework beneath the skin.

Once her body integrates this newly shaped cartilage, a subsequent procedure will be performed to elevate the ear and create a more natural contour away from the head.

Although this surgery does not restore hearing, it provides a significant improvement in appearance and can greatly enhance her confidence and overall quality of life.

Following this case, we performed surgeries on four additional patients. Some procedures were more complex than others, making for a long and demanding day, but our team remains deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve and looks forward to three more meaningful days of volunteer work.

This week I’m back in Ethiopia with the amazing Dr. Le, and together we’re on a mission to help as many people as we can while we’re here. Today we met and screened a handful of patients, from little ones born with cleft lips to those suffering from severe burns and complex deformities.

You’d think that with all the combined experience Dr. Le and I have, we’d be used to it by now… but days like today always hit hard.

Meeting these patients and their families reminds me just how powerful compassion and access to care can be. It’s an incredible feeling to offer our services at no cost, but it’s also heartbreaking knowing that, with such limited time, we can’t help everyone who needs it.

Still, today we were able to repair a bilateral cleft lip on a six-month-old infant and release a hand contracture on a toddler.

Small victories that mean the world to these families and this was only day one. We’ve got four more days to go, and I look forward to being able to help more of those in need.
