🟡⚪️ The color of fat we remove during Lipedema Liposuction tells us a lot about what’s happening underneath.

Beige or white fat is typically more fibrotic and is often found in the lower calves and ankles where cuffing forms. This tissue is denser, less pliable, and can feel almost cement-like. Yellow fat tends to be less fibrotic, where it feels softer and more mobile.

Addressing cuffing is key, as it can strangulate lymphatic flow and contribute to increased swelling below the ankle.

💁‍♂️ This is a case of male Lipedema, which is less common, but absolutely possible.

While the gene is carried as frequently in men as in women, it’s often not expressed unless there’s a hormonal imbalance. In my patient’s case, his mother had Lipedema and actually underwent surgery with us, which helped us recognize the pattern in him as well.
 He shows classic signs of Stage 2, Type 2 Lipedema: disproportionate fullness in the thighs and outer thighs, extending to the knees, as well as fullness through the abdomen, torso, arms, and even the forearms. There’s minimal involvement of the calves and ankles, and likely areas of fibrosis.
 Awareness matters. Lipedema doesn’t only affect women, and early recognition can change lives.

💬 My patient Beth and I were recently featured on the after she was targeted by a deepfake scam promoting a fraudulent so-called “miracle cream” for Lipedema called Svelta Venastra.

These ads used AI-generated videos that stole my likeness, Dr. Karen Herbst’s, and even those of public figures such as Oprah, Kelly Clarkson, and Carnie Wilson, all without consent.

Over the past several months, I’ve received countless messages from women who unknowingly purchased this fake product, believing it to be medically endorsed. That is why we felt it was essential to speak out and help protect the Lipedema community.

These scams prey on vulnerable women seeking real answers for a complex medical condition. My commitment to this community runs deep, and I will continue to use my platform to call out misinformation and anyone attempting to exploit patient trust.

I urge everyone: always do your research, approach “miracle” promises with caution, and speak with your physician before purchasing any product promoted online. Your health should never be placed in the hands of deceptive marketing.

🙋‍♀️My patient Stephanie had a liposuction procedure done with a previous surgeon. There was a complication on her right leg, which created a significant gaping wound and the skin scarred down into muscle.

This likely occurred from vascular compromise and the surgeon not staying in the “safe plane,” entering into deeper structures unknowingly with the cannula. Then the skin quickly became ischemic.

There were also irregular areas throughout her legs because the prior treatment did not respect the skin or blend the tissues as a complete unit. Being under general anesthesia can make this more difficult, since patients can’t feel or respond to discomfort the way they can under tumescent “twilight” anesthesia, and you cannot achieve optimal positioning to stay within the “safe plane.”

Our goal now is to help restore balance, contour, and function as much as possible, and to make sure her future treatments are done safely, conservatively, and with respect for the skin and underlying structures.

👨🏻‍⚕️ When performing circumferential torso surgery, it is crucial to include the mid and upper back.

Skipping this area can lead to unbalanced results over time, becoming disproportionate, and the lower back may remain retracted while the upper back “rolls over,” creating an unnatural appearance.

Treating the abdomen, flanks, and upper back as a circumferential unit ensures smooth blending and a more harmonious, long-lasting outcome.

One lesser-known symptom of Lipedema is pain or tenderness when putting on a blood pressure cuff.

Many of our patients describe discomfort or even sharp pain from simple pressure, whether it’s a cuff tightening around the arm, a pet jumping onto their lap, or even light touch in affected areas.

This sensitivity is due to the inflammation and fibrosis that occur within Lipedema tissue, making it painful to the touch. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone and it could be a sign of Lipedema. Raising awareness helps more people recognize the symptoms early and get the support they deserve.

🙋‍♀️ My lovely Stage 3 patient from Texas is back for her next stage of treatment.

Previously, she underwent surgery on her calves, ankles, thighs, and arms. Today, we plan to treat her circumferential torso. She’s already seeing incredible improvements, and has reported that her pain is completely gone.

She plans to address remaining skin laxity and vascular issues in future procedures, but her progress and transformation is already remarkable.
