Not Strictly Pilates WWW.NOTSTRICTLYPILATES.ORG

I help people get from where they are to where they want to be through tools including traditional physical therapy and myofascial release, Pilates & Reiki. Over the past 25 years, I have helped people just like you to get out of pain, to rebuild strength and confidence in themselves (more than just physical!), and get back to or keep doing the things they love. Myofascial release is a gentle yet powerful manual therapy technique used to treat the entire fascial web of your body. Your fascial web extends from the deepest layer of your cells to the most superficial layer of fascia underneath your skin, in one continuous sheath. (Imagine wrapping everything in your fridge in one continues sheet of plastic wrap without tearing it. Pulling something in one corner will have far reaching effects into the opposite corner!) We treat your body as a whole, and your being as a whole. We will also focus on self care at home and corrective exercises because the one of the first goals is to put some control back into your hands. When you're ready to move on to the next phase, Not Strictly Pilates classes are a great transition to help you get even stronger and more centered than before!

No spiders were harmed in the filming of this video,
Though I must admit I was TERRIFIED that a giant wolf spider was going to jump out and bite me, so I did not do the best job of filming.

This spiders web kinda-sorta gives you a bit of an idea of how a "pull" (or restriction) in one area of the interconnected web of fascia in your body impacts the entire system.
Your fascial web is a 3 dimensional system, connected from the top of your head to the tips of your toes and from the outermost layer of skin through to the marrow of your bones, your brain and spinal cord, and around every cell of your being. It's more complex than this spiders web, which is magical and complex in and of itself.

UPDATE!
Due to weather and parking ban, we are rescheduling to Saturday, March 14th
Tea & Treats
180-186 Cabot Street, 2nd floor
Beverly, MA
We can chat all about fascia - what it is, what a restriction feels like, what you can do to release restrictions.
I hope to see you there!! bring your questions if you've got'em!

This is going on my bucket list for 2026!

Something magical, and yet so close by!!
This might tide me over until I can get myself to an equine myofascial release course:)

Read the signals, identify the flick of an ear, the shift in weight, and the change in breathing that tells you what a horse is thinking and feeling. Speak their dialect Practice using your body language and focus to send clear, consistent messages in a horse's language.

UPDATE:
Due to weather and parking ban we are rescheduling to March 14th

Here's a fun little video I found on my computer that has nothing to do with this post!
My son went through a stop motion animation phase:) He's 16 now.
It's true, the years do go by FAST!

While you're here watching this fun little video, I'd love to invite you to stop by and catch up Saturday, March 14th from 11 until 1.
My suite mates and I are hosting our annual Valentines Tea & Treats
180-186 Cabot Street, 2nd Floor
Beverly, MA

I'd love to catch up.
If you're kids are older like mine, we can commiserate on how fast the years have gone by.
If you've got littles, I can reassure that you WILL sleep through the night again, you will read for pleasure again, and you will have time to hang out with folks that aren't the parents of your kids friends - not that your kids friends parents aren't wonderful. Mine were!
Don't have kids? I'd love to hear about your cats, dogs, birds, fish, lizards, houseplants, or dustbunnies. I've had all of those at one time or another.

What is the difference between a Physical Therapy Session and a Pilates Session?

PHYSICAL THERAPY
Massachusetts is a direct access state. You do not need a prescription to work with me.
Prior to your session you will receive intake forms to be filled out at least 24 hours prior to your session.
Your 1st session is physical therapy evaluation so I'll ask a lot of questions and there's a lot of talking.
Depending on your answers, I'll look at your posture and some other stuff like range of motion, strength - it all depends on what the issue is and what's been going on. A thorough evaluation doesn't mean we have to talk about or look at every single thing on day one however, because it's really important to have some time for treatment.
My top priority for treatment TYPICALLY includes teaching you at least one thing you can do at home to help you get out of pain and back to what you love.
My second priority is to have some time for hands on treatment or manual therapy so you can get a sense of what my work feels like.
Your follow up sessions will include some talking - checking in and time for education (teaching you more ways to help yourself), hands on or manual therapy, and exercise. Some clients start with all or nearly all manual therapy and just a bit of movement and exercise, ideally moving towards more movement and less hands on as things improve. Some clients start with more education, exercise, and movement based treatment with just a bit of hands on treatment as needed. It depends on a lot of factors.
PHYSICAL THERAPY sessions are offered in person or remotely, but due to licensure you must be located in the state of Massachusetts for me to work with you online.

PILATES SESSIONS
Prior to your Pilates session, you will receive an intake packet to be completed 24 hours before your session.
At your session we'll do some talking about any issues you've had and we'll do a quick screening but most of your session will be moving. I may teach you some self release, but there is no hands on treatment in a Pilates sessions.
Pilates sessions can be done in person or remotely, and you can be anywhere in the world.

It's been a while since I shared a bit about myself along with a totally awkward but super fun photo!

This is me on a trapeze and lyra taster class at Seaside Circus in Gloucester.
Yes, I am holding on for dear life.
It was so hard. It was so much fun.
I highly recommend!

If you don't know me, I'm Angela Marciano McCarthy.
I help people find lasting relief from pain and stay active. As a physical therapist specializing in manual therapy, a Pilates teacher, and Reiki Master I've dedicated the past 30 years to helping people just like you to break free from pain - particularly chronic or unexplained pain that seems to defy traditional treatment.

When I'm not working with clients or spending time with my friends and family,
I'm either napping, trying something new and different (like static trapeze and lyra) or studying -looking for ways to get even better results with my clients.

Here's what I am currently studying:
Pilates Legacy Teacher Training - weekly mentorship with the amazing Jennifer Kries
Applied Biotensegrity in Physical Therapy - a year long course taught by a group of physical therapists
The Functional Pelvis 5 month online course with an in person lab component with Lyndsay Vestal, Occupational Therapist
Visceral Manipulation - a direct approach to treating the fascial connections of the organs (you're guts aren't just floating around on the inside - they're connected by fascia to the walls of the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities. They can get glommed up after injury, surgery, or infections and give you some wild and wacky symptoms that don't make sense.) I took my first in person training last year, and I'm reviewing the materials.
Neural mobilization - Reviewing videos, articles, and books about addressing restrictions in the slide and glide of your peripheral nerves . They can get glommed up too, and if they're not moving they can give you some symptoms that "don't make sense".
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release - reviewing specific techniques for my clients and catching study group sessions in Western Mass and Maine when I can.

That's what I'm currently studying, but honestly I want to know everything!!!

Life is more fun when you can keep doing what you love!

We help people over 30 live with strength and confidence in their bodies so they can lead active & healthy lives, even if they have been troubled by nagging injuries for years; WITHOUT unnecessary medications or medical procedures. I hear from people all the time that they are frustrated with nagging aches or pains - neck, shoulders, back, hips, or knees. Sometimes these things come and go, and sometimes they are always there, just worse after you “do anything physical.” You may want to keep running, or cycling, or playing sports, or having fun with your kids but they keep getting into trouble. Your neck or back “goes out”, or your hips start waking them at night or when your sitting or walking.

We are here to help you. Help you figure out and understand just what’s gone wrong with your body, and what you can do about it. We can help get your body pointed in the right direction with hands on therapy to help you release what’s tight, or encourage systems that aren’t doing their fair share. It’s hard - our therapists spent many years in school, and continue studying and learning all the time. We can help you make sense of all the information out there so you can be confident you are making the best health care decisions!

We are on a mission to help make the world a better place through movement, education, inspiration, and transformation.

We are guided by our core values:
