The Girdler House was founded in 1887, originally named the Old Ladies Home Society, located in a small house at 12 Lovett Street, Beverly, MA. The home began when a group of young women were driven by compassion to provide shelter for moderately independent women over 60 years of age. The original home housed just five ladies, but many more were interested. Thanks to community support and help from church groups, individuals and businesses, the Old Ladies Home Society was able to buy and refit the Beverly Inn property at 78 Lothrop Street, increasing accommodation to 15 residents starting in 1919. In 1967, the Old Ladies Home Society adopted “Girdler House” as its name after its first president.
Today, the Girdler House remains at 78 Lothrop Street, Beverly, MA, overlooking the ocean and providing a wonderful home for 14 elderly women.
