🌸 The Matriarch of BodiScience

A Special Invitation to Our Community

Many of you know her.
Many of you ask about her.
Many of you have felt her gentle presence over the years.

This week we celebrate someone who has quietly been part of the soul of BodiScience for more than 25 years…

Miss Dorothy.

She has witnessed your life moments, your healing journeys, your celebrations, your challenges — often from a quiet corner, with a warm smile and a listening heart.

As we celebrate her birthday, we would love to include the extended BodiScience family — you.

✨ We have created an oversized birthday card in the spa.
If you feel called, you are warmly invited to stop by and add your signature or a loving message.

This is not just a birthday.
It is a celebration of presence, legacy, and the beauty of growing together.

With love,
Dawn & the BodiScience Family

Is your nervous system trying to tell you something?

Your body speaks through subtle signals — tension, fatigue, restless sleep, or skin that has lost its natural glow.

In today’s fast-paced world, the nervous system rarely has the opportunity to fully reset.

At BodiScience, our therapies are designed to gently guide the body back to balance using principles from neuroscience, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Through therapeutic touch, lymphatic stimulation, aromatic oils, and energetic therapies, the body begins to shift from stress into restoration.

When the nervous system recalibrates:

✨ the mind becomes clearer
✨ the body relaxes
✨ the skin regains vitality

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for our wellbeing is simply allow the body to reset.

If your body has been asking for this, we would be honored to care for you.

Snow Outside. Spring Within.

Even while temperatures remain cold, your physiology is already shifting.

Energetic Spring began February 5 — the Wood season governed by the Liver and Gallbladder. Detox pathways activate. Circulation increases. Emotional sensitivity may rise.

The skin often reflects this transition through congestion, oil imbalance, or tension along the jawline.

For 35 years, BodiScience has treated skin through the lens of seasonal physiology — not trends.

Spring is not about aggressive correction.
It is about restoring flow — gently and intelligently.

And this transition window matters.

What you support now determines how your skin and nervous system enter Summer.

If you are feeling:
• Restless yet tired
• Reactive yet inward
• Congested or dull

This is your invitation to shift with intention.

✨ Choose Your Spring Alignment:

• Schedule a Wood Season facial to clarify and circulate
• Book a lymphatic therapy session to move stagnation
• Begin a seasonal ritual consultation for personalized guidance

Suite 215C offers a quiet, intentional environment for this shift.

Appointments are limited during this seasonal window.

Do not wait for Summer correction.
Support the transition now.

With care,
Dawn

There is a moment that happens in the treatment room that most people never see.

A soft expression crosses a guest’s face.
The smallest smile.
Not posed. Not social. Not performative.

Just… release.

To witness that moment feels almost sacred. It is like catching a glimpse of someone’s soul when they finally feel safe enough to let go.

Often, I work with my eyes closed.

Not out of ritual — but precision.

When my eyes close, my hands see more clearly. I can feel where the fascia is gripping. Where a tendon is guarding. Where a ligament is holding memory. Where a muscle has been bracing for far too long.

This is not performing a spa treatment.

This is entering a sacred moment of tenderness.

It is a conversation with the nervous system.
A quiet message to the body:
You are safe now.
You may recalibrate.
You may return home.

And when that shift happens — you see it.
The jaw softens.
The breath deepens.
The skin brightens.

The smile appears.

That smile is not about relaxation.
It is about regulation.

For 35 years at BodiScience, we have honored that the skin is the outer expression of inner state. When the nervous system settles, beauty reveals itself naturally.

To be trusted with that moment is something I never take lightly.

Today I learned of the passing of the sister of one of my beloved team members, Shayna. My heart broke when I received the news. Her family is important to me, and being present in moments of profound loss feels not only compassionate, but necessary.

I learned that the wake was this evening.

I was at work.

Our clients were scheduled, and I felt the responsibility to remain, because when someone books time with us, we hold that time with respect. Commitment matters. Showing up matters.

What made this evening especially tender was that I waited for a client who never arrived. By the time I realized they would not be coming, it was too late for me to attend the wake.

And that is where the ache settled.

There are moments in life that are paramount, moments we cannot recreate, cannot reschedule, cannot recover. I have missed many of them over the years while tending to responsibility. Tonight felt like another.

This isn’t written in frustration. It’s written in reflection.

When we make a reservation, an appointment, a commitment, it may seem small. But it isn’t. Time is the one currency that never replenishes. When we do not honor a commitment, the ripple often extends further than we see.

We do not just cancel an appointment.
We alter someone’s day.
We shift what might have been possible.
Sometimes, we unknowingly take from someone a moment they cannot get back.

Tonight reminded me how precious time truly is, for our clients, for our families, for one another.

May we hold it with care.

There are moments in business that feel circular… sacred almost.

Years ago, a lovely guest stayed with us while completing her book Learning to Breathe. She spent quiet hours in our treatment rooms, journaling between therapies, absorbing the rhythm of breath, oil, stillness, and restoration.

A few weeks… she returned.

And in the most unexpected way, she found something beautiful —
a video she had taken years ago of a much younger me, sitting in the transition room, teaching her how to perform self-Abhyanga.

She watched it and then sent it to me.

There I was — explaining the strokes, the rhythm, the intention.
Reminding her that Abhyanga is not about product… it is about relationship.
Relationship to your nervous system.
To your lymphatic flow.
To your breath.
To yourself.

Thirty-five years later, the teaching remains the same.

Abhyanga — the Ayurvedic ritual of warm oil self-massage — is one of the most profound ways to regulate the nervous system and restore balance to the doshas.

If you would like to learn, here is the foundation:

✨ Step 1: Dry Brush First
Using our natural fiber gloves, perform gentle dry brushing toward the heart. This stimulates lymphatic flow, supports detoxification, and awakens the skin before oil application.

✨ Step 2: Choose the Correct Oil
Use a dosha-specific oil to support your constitution:

• Vata oil – grounding, warming, deeply nourishing
• Pitta oil – cooling, soothing, calming to inflammation
• Kapha oil – stimulating, clarifying, invigorating

Warm the oil slightly. Slow down. This is not a race.

✨ Step 3: Apply with Intention
Long strokes on long bones.
Circular motions around joints.
Clockwise circles over the abdomen.
Gentle pressure over the heart.

Allow the oil to pe*****te for 10–20 minutes before showering lightly.

This is more than skincare.
This is neuroscience meeting Ayurveda.
This is skin as an extension of the brain.
This is beauty as health made visible.

The irony of her book title was not lost on us — Learning to Breathe.
Because Abhyanga teaches that too.

And to witness the continuity — from a younger Dawn teaching in a quiet room, to now — was a reminder that when something is rooted in truth, it does not age. It deepens.

If you’d like guidance selecting your oil or learning your doshic constitution, we are here.

Some teachings never change.
They simply wait for you to return to them. 🌿

Sunday Reflection:

As we are about to be blanketed in another snow covered wonderland, I am looking at this beautiful video Tom Mangelson just shared. I invite you to do the same and watch as the miraculous winter landscape ❄️ is home for many…bears

There is a story I often share with clients — usually when someone feels unsettled because I’ve asked them to leave with oil in their hair… or with a style that feels less than perfectly polished.

What I rarely share is the deeper story behind that lesson.

It begins long before La Jolla. Long before Ayurveda. Long before BodiScience.

As a little girl, I formed a relationship with a bear at Capron Park Zoo. I named him “Baby.” Every Sunday morning, my mother and I followed the same ritual. We stopped at a small local grocery store where they knew us well. They would give us day-old bread, lettuce, and always a bit of honey — they knew exactly where we were headed.

When we arrived at the zoo, Baby somehow recognized our footsteps. If he was inside, he would slowly lumber out at the sound. My mother wore a ring and would gently tap it against the fence — our signal. He would sit in anticipation.

I was small and could barely reach him, but we would roll bread in honey and toss it gently. He would tilt his head and open his mouth wide, receiving it with a patient trust. Lettuce with honey was his other favorite. As I grew taller, I could finally reach him more easily.

It was our sacred Sunday ritual.

Until one Sunday, he didn’t come.

We learned that a boy had taunted him. The bear reacted instinctively. The child was injured. And Baby — deemed dangerous — was put down.

In that moment, something in me shifted.

I learned about projection.
About instinct.
About consequences.
About how quickly innocence can be misinterpreted through fear.
And about how rarely we pause to look with the heart before we judge.

Years later, I found myself in La Jolla studying at the Chopra Center, immersed in authentic Ayurvedic training. Each day I received treatments, including Shirodhara — the sacred pouring of warm oil across the forehead to quiet the nervous system. When you receive Shirodhara, you do not wash your hair and rush back into the world. You sleep in the oil. You let the medicine continue its work.

Each afternoon, after treatment, I would walk past a gallery I longed to enter — Thomas Mangelsen’s gallery.

Closed.
Closed.
Closed.

Until one day, the door was open.

Inside, I wandered quietly. I looked only at the polar bears. Nothing else.

The woman at the desk finally asked, “Why the polar bears?”

And I told her about Baby.

She paused and said, “You need to come back this evening. Tom will be here.”

I hesitated. “Is it alright if I come as I am? I’m in the middle of treatments. I’ll have oil in my hair.”

She smiled. “Absolutely. Come as you are.”

That evening, the door was opened by a gentleman in a tuxedo. Champagne and caviar were being served. The room was filled with haute couture. And there I stood — hair completely saturated in oil.

For a brief moment, I considered leaving.

Instead, I stayed.

I was welcomed. Introduced. Escorted past a line of patrons to meet Thomas Mangelsen himself. We spoke about the bears. About patience. About waiting for the right moment to capture truth.

And I realized something.

The reason I was invited back was not because of how I looked.
It was because of what I carried.
A story.
A reverence.
A heart that sees.

So when I gently tell a client, “You can leave the oil in,” or “It’s okay if your hair is a little messy for the grocery store,” I am not being casual.

I am reminding them:

Healing is not always polished.
Medicine is not always glamorous.
And confidence does not come from appearance — it comes from alignment.

If I can stand in a formal gallery opening with oil in my hair — fully grounded in who I am — you can absolutely step into your day a little undone.

Come as you are.

We don’t ask for votes often… but this one matters 🤍

For 35+ years, BodiScience has been more than treatments.
It’s been conversations.
Healing moments.
Deep exhale breaths after long seasons of life.

We’ve held space for stress, transitions, celebrations, caregiving, grief, and renewal — and every time you choose to return, you remind us why we began.

If you have ever left here feeling:
• lighter in your body
• clearer in your mind
• calmer in your nervous system
• or simply cared for

then you already understand what BodiScience is.

Your vote isn’t for a spa.
It’s for a philosophy — beauty is health made visible.

If we’ve been part of your wellness journey, we would be deeply honored by your support in
Best of the North Shore 2026.
