There are moments in business that feel circular… sacred almost.

Years ago, a lovely guest stayed with us while completing her book Learning to Breathe. She spent quiet hours in our treatment rooms, journaling between therapies, absorbing the rhythm of breath, oil, stillness, and restoration.

A few weeks… she returned.

And in the most unexpected way, she found something beautiful —
a video she had taken years ago of a much younger me, sitting in the transition room, teaching her how to perform self-Abhyanga.

She watched it and then sent it to me.

There I was — explaining the strokes, the rhythm, the intention.
Reminding her that Abhyanga is not about product… it is about relationship.
Relationship to your nervous system.
To your lymphatic flow.
To your breath.
To yourself.

Thirty-five years later, the teaching remains the same.

Abhyanga — the Ayurvedic ritual of warm oil self-massage — is one of the most profound ways to regulate the nervous system and restore balance to the doshas.

If you would like to learn, here is the foundation:

✨ Step 1: Dry Brush First
Using our natural fiber gloves, perform gentle dry brushing toward the heart. This stimulates lymphatic flow, supports detoxification, and awakens the skin before oil application.

✨ Step 2: Choose the Correct Oil
Use a dosha-specific oil to support your constitution:

• Vata oil – grounding, warming, deeply nourishing
• Pitta oil – cooling, soothing, calming to inflammation
• Kapha oil – stimulating, clarifying, invigorating

Warm the oil slightly. Slow down. This is not a race.

✨ Step 3: Apply with Intention
Long strokes on long bones.
Circular motions around joints.
Clockwise circles over the abdomen.
Gentle pressure over the heart.

Allow the oil to pe*****te for 10–20 minutes before showering lightly.

This is more than skincare.
This is neuroscience meeting Ayurveda.
This is skin as an extension of the brain.
This is beauty as health made visible.

The irony of her book title was not lost on us — Learning to Breathe.
Because Abhyanga teaches that too.

And to witness the continuity — from a younger Dawn teaching in a quiet room, to now — was a reminder that when something is rooted in truth, it does not age. It deepens.

If you’d like guidance selecting your oil or learning your doshic constitution, we are here.

Some teachings never change.
They simply wait for you to return to them. 🌿

Sunday Reflection:

As we are about to be blanketed in another snow covered wonderland, I am looking at this beautiful video Tom Mangelson just shared. I invite you to do the same and watch as the miraculous winter landscape ❄️ is home for many…bears

There is a story I often share with clients — usually when someone feels unsettled because I’ve asked them to leave with oil in their hair… or with a style that feels less than perfectly polished.

What I rarely share is the deeper story behind that lesson.

It begins long before La Jolla. Long before Ayurveda. Long before BodiScience.

As a little girl, I formed a relationship with a bear at Capron Park Zoo. I named him “Baby.” Every Sunday morning, my mother and I followed the same ritual. We stopped at a small local grocery store where they knew us well. They would give us day-old bread, lettuce, and always a bit of honey — they knew exactly where we were headed.

When we arrived at the zoo, Baby somehow recognized our footsteps. If he was inside, he would slowly lumber out at the sound. My mother wore a ring and would gently tap it against the fence — our signal. He would sit in anticipation.

I was small and could barely reach him, but we would roll bread in honey and toss it gently. He would tilt his head and open his mouth wide, receiving it with a patient trust. Lettuce with honey was his other favorite. As I grew taller, I could finally reach him more easily.

It was our sacred Sunday ritual.

Until one Sunday, he didn’t come.

We learned that a boy had taunted him. The bear reacted instinctively. The child was injured. And Baby — deemed dangerous — was put down.

In that moment, something in me shifted.

I learned about projection.
About instinct.
About consequences.
About how quickly innocence can be misinterpreted through fear.
And about how rarely we pause to look with the heart before we judge.

Years later, I found myself in La Jolla studying at the Chopra Center, immersed in authentic Ayurvedic training. Each day I received treatments, including Shirodhara — the sacred pouring of warm oil across the forehead to quiet the nervous system. When you receive Shirodhara, you do not wash your hair and rush back into the world. You sleep in the oil. You let the medicine continue its work.

Each afternoon, after treatment, I would walk past a gallery I longed to enter — Thomas Mangelsen’s gallery.

Closed.
Closed.
Closed.

Until one day, the door was open.

Inside, I wandered quietly. I looked only at the polar bears. Nothing else.

The woman at the desk finally asked, “Why the polar bears?”

And I told her about Baby.

She paused and said, “You need to come back this evening. Tom will be here.”

I hesitated. “Is it alright if I come as I am? I’m in the middle of treatments. I’ll have oil in my hair.”

She smiled. “Absolutely. Come as you are.”

That evening, the door was opened by a gentleman in a tuxedo. Champagne and caviar were being served. The room was filled with haute couture. And there I stood — hair completely saturated in oil.

For a brief moment, I considered leaving.

Instead, I stayed.

I was welcomed. Introduced. Escorted past a line of patrons to meet Thomas Mangelsen himself. We spoke about the bears. About patience. About waiting for the right moment to capture truth.

And I realized something.

The reason I was invited back was not because of how I looked.
It was because of what I carried.
A story.
A reverence.
A heart that sees.

So when I gently tell a client, “You can leave the oil in,” or “It’s okay if your hair is a little messy for the grocery store,” I am not being casual.

I am reminding them:

Healing is not always polished.
Medicine is not always glamorous.
And confidence does not come from appearance — it comes from alignment.

If I can stand in a formal gallery opening with oil in my hair — fully grounded in who I am — you can absolutely step into your day a little undone.

Come as you are.

Over the years, many clients come to us believing coconut oil — or another “natural” oil — is the perfect facial moisturizer.

And I understand why.

The internet makes it sound simple.
Natural equals better.
Oil equals hydration.

But here’s what we consistently see in our treatment room after 35 years of analyzing skin — not through a screen, but through touch.

Clients often present with:
• Lack of tone
• Reduced elasticity
• Surface shine but underlying dehydration
• Congestion or imbalance

And they’re confused.

“I’m moisturizing every day.”
“I use coconut oil.”
“My skin still feels tight.”

Here’s the truth.

Most oils sit on the surface. They soften the top layer, but they do not create true hydration within the tissue. Hydration happens when ingredients communicate with the skin at a cellular level and support its natural regulatory processes.

Soft is not the same as hydrated.
Shiny is not the same as healthy.

There is so much misinformation online — and while trends come and go, physiology does not.

At BodiScience, we rely on 35 years of hands-on experience, neuroscience-informed protocols, Ayurvedic and TCM principles, and carefully formulated cosmobiceutical serums that are designed to absorb intelligently into the tissue — not just coat it.

Your skin is living intelligence.
It requires communication, not just lubrication.

If you’ve been doing “all the right things” and still feel a lack of tone, elasticity, or true hydration, it may be time for a professional skin analysis and a customized plan.

We’re here to educate.
We’re here to guide.
And we’re here to restore what your skin is capable of when supported correctly.

Call us to schedule your personalized skin consultation — and let’s bring clarity back to your skincare.

Over the past three years, BodiScience Wellness Center & Spa has lived the very lessons we teach.

We speak often about resilience in the body — how the nervous system recalibrates, how skin reflects internal strength, how healing is not linear but cyclical. What I did not anticipate was how deeply I would be called to embody those teachings myself.

Like so many small businesses, we were tested in ways we could never have predicted. But for BodiScience, the challenge was layered. During the pandemic years and beyond, I was navigating a cancer diagnosis — lymphoma and leukemia — while continuing to lead the business. At the same time, my mother underwent heart surgeries and later suffered a stroke. I gradually became not only a business owner, but a caregiver. There were days I moved from treatment room to hospital room, from staff training to insurance calls, from comforting clients to quietly managing my own fear.

On paper, it looked like a period of operational strain: staffing instability, fluctuating revenue, rising expenses, training new employees only to lose them, and the mounting weight of an EIDL loan taken to keep our doors open. Behind the scenes, it was a season of grit I can only describe as spiritual endurance.

There is a moment that stands out as the meaningful learning point.

In 2024, after years of trying to rebuild to our pre-pandemic scale, I stood alone in our 4,000-square-foot spa and realized something profound: survival was no longer the goal. Alignment was.

For months I had been pushing forward out of responsibility — to my team, to our clients of 30+ years, to the legacy my mother helped inspire when BodiScience was founded in 1990. But I was exhausted. My health required more attention. My mother needed me. Staffing was inconsistent. And the size of the business I had built over decades no longer matched the life I was being called to live.

The learning moment was this: growth is not always expansion. Sometimes growth is refinement.

Instead of closing, instead of collapsing under pressure, I made the hardest and wisest decision of my professional life — I downsized.

In 2025, we transitioned from a large 4000 ground-floor facility into a boutique 1,100-square-foot suite. Three treatment rooms instead of many. A smaller team. Lower overhead. A more intimate client experience. It felt, at first, like surrender.

It was not surrender.

It was leadership.

The grit that carried me through was not loud. It wasn’t bravado or hustle culture. It was quiet consistency. Showing up when my energy was low. Continuing to educate my team. Maintaining payroll even when revenue was unpredictable. Communicating transparently. Refinancing where possible. Seeking counsel instead of isolating. Asking for help when I needed it — something entrepreneurs rarely do.

I learned that resilience in business mirrors resilience in the body: you cannot override depletion forever. You must regulate. You must recalibrate. You must adapt.

Since that decision, BodiScience has changed in profound ways.

Operationally, we are leaner and more intentional. We refined our service menu to focus on our highest-impact treatments rooted in neuroscience, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We implemented clearer systems. We embraced technology more strategically. We reduced overhead dramatically. Our payroll structure is healthier and more sustainable.

Culturally, we are stronger. Our team understands that adaptability is part of our DNA. They witnessed transparency. They saw that leadership includes vulnerability. That created loyalty and depth of trust I could never manufacture through policy alone.

Personally, I changed.

For 35 years, the expectation of defining success was by expansion — square footage, staff count, accolades, growth charts. I now define success by sustainability, integrity, and presence. I work with greater clarity. I am more selective. I protect my health. I schedule time with my mother intentionally. I no longer equate busyness with value.

The wisdom gained is simple but transformative: resilience is not about enduring at all costs. It is about choosing the structure that allows you to endure well.

We did not merely survive the past three years. We transformed because of them.

Clients feel it. They tell us the space feels more intimate, more grounded, more aligned with our philosophy that beauty is health made visible. There is a quiet confidence in the business now. Less noise. More purpose.

What I am most proud of is this: during a period when many small businesses closed their doors, BodiScience chose conscious evolution. We faced illness, caregiving, financial strain, staffing turnover, and uncertainty — and responded not with contraction of spirit, but with clarity of mission.

The grit was showing up.
The wisdom was letting go.
The change was becoming truer to who we are.

BodiScience today is not smaller. It is stronger.

Much Love Always,
Dawn
