Preparing to drive in the winter weather, but don't know what “Chain Controls” mean? We've got you covered! Here's how Caltrans defines the 3 levels of :

R-1: Chains or snow tread tires required. Snow tires must have
a tread depth of 6/32” with “MS”, “M/S”, “M+S” or the words “MUD AND SNOW” imprint on the tire’s sidewall.

R-2: Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except
4-Wheel Drives (4WD) or All-Wheel Drives (AWD) with snow tread tires on all 4 wheels. 4WD’s must carry chains. If you have 4WD, engage it. Refer to vehicles operator’s manual for correct selection of 4WD or off-road functions.

R-3: Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles - NO EXCEPTIONS!

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

⛓️ Check to make sure that your chains/cables fit your vehicle's tires.

🗺️ Monitor road conditions frequently with the Caltrans QuickMap tool.: https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. Also available in our app, Big Bear Lake 365.

⚠️ Exercise caution while driving in the mountains during inclement weather.
