As we look toward Derby season and celebrate the tradition, it feels important to remember the full story. The Run for the Roses carries a legacy shaped by riders whose contributions deserve to be honored.
Before the Kentucky Derby became a long-standing tradition, Black jockeys helped define it.
At the very first Kentucky Derby in 1875, 13 of the 15 riders were Black. Their talent, discipline, and extraordinary partnership with their horses shaped the early years of the sport. Between 1875 and 1902, Black jockeys won 15 of the first 28 Derbies.
Over the years, systemic racism pushed Black jockeys out of professional racing, despite their foundational role in building the sport.
Horses respond to energy, regulation, and trust, not status or skin color. The way they work reminds us that connection begins beyond bias.. 💜🐴
