First on the list, the plantar flexor group or the ๐—š๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ but these are the main ones that matter most.

They are important because they slow your body down when doing important tasks like sitting, squatting, and generally stabilizing the ankle.

These muscles are generally strong and overused that they easily overtake the underused muscle right next to the tibia bone(Shin bone) called the Tibialis Anterior, which is a muscle that causes the foot at the ankle to โ€œDorsiflexโ€ or take pressure off the gas pedal.

Over-use of the plantar flexor group causes a host of problems that can travel up the body causing referred knee pain, low back/ hip pain, and generally cross body weight shifts that can and will lead to debilitating injury.

โ€œTry Thisโ€

Doing simple foam rolling or using a self release tool for 60 sec to 2 mins max a day for these muscles can make a world of difference by increasing strength, stability while walking, and overall balance. (https://youtu.be/ZZ5FUX6J4_I)

This is important as it is the only muscle that pulls the foot back up into position. Strengthening is required here! Using a band to perform the action of taking the foot off the gas pedal will strengthen this generally weak muscle action.

My Story

Itโ€™s been a decade in the making!

As I sat there palpating and releasing a deep neck flexor muscle on the third whiplash client of the day. I began to notice that an uncommon pain in my lumbar area (low back) was beginning to grow in intensity. Suddenly, the sensation of liquid descended from my eye and a stream of tears trickled down my cheek. How long had this pain been going on? Surely I hadnโ€™t denied its existence up to this point. Maybe, I knew all along and just choked it up to the aging process and various physical traumas I had endured over the course of my life. I mean, I was in relatively good health with no pressing medical conditions or acute trauma. For a split second, I contemplated the last few months of working at the chiropractor and the type of work I had been doing on clients. Predominantly seated slightly hunched over with a moderate number of client cases being in the cervical (neck) area. Maintaining this seated position had now re-educated my muscle length and joint alignment into an inefficient position strong enough to fight the forces of gravity. This chronic shortening action was causing adhesions (knots) to form all throughout the bellies of my muscles and surrounding tissues causing other systems of the body ieโ€ฆlymph, blood, nerves, etcโ€ฆ to begin lowering their ability to maintain healthy functions. The goal a balanced relatively pain free body,I thought right? Holding firm to this idea, and prior to the pain I would receive weekly adjustments, a 2 hour massage, and on my off time be active. So why in the world was this pain in existence? Fast forward a few more months and the constant sharp, stabbing, lock your body up pain sat with me in every appointment. Days of being in that dim lit room trying to help alleviate someone elseโ€™s severe pain, while suffering through mine broke me and I became obsessed with defeating this pain and the pain of others. I combed through client soap charts, studies, and textbooks looking for clues. Time passed and the kids birthday party was upon me. For the life of me I didnโ€™t know how I was planning to move the 2 pallets of stone from the part of the yard needed to place the bounce house we were getting for the party. Months of sleepless nights, constant pain, and fatigue were now sown deep into my body, pain was my lifestyle. There was a task at hand! My body began rotating from side to side, I would squat down on one leg in a lunge position and lifting the stones place them in the wagon adjacent myself. It didnโ€™t take long for me to stop and question my ability to accomplish this task through all the pain that was now surging through my lower back. The inability to fight the forces of gravity because of chronic misalignment patterns and lack of postural strength were ever present. โ€œCome on, itโ€™s your childrenโ€™s birthday partyโ€ I told myself. I began to lift the stones again and I started to feel a burning sensation in my now working legs and lower back; particularly, muscles I hadnโ€™t used in quite sometime ieโ€ฆgluteus (my butt) and deep core muscles. The Epiphany moment came as I arose after uncounted repetitions and there was zero pain in my back. As I stood there pain free, the most free I had felt in months, a flood of information flooded my mind. All those client soap charts and anatomy textbook clues washed over me. I finally understood my pain and thus True Balance Therapy was born. Over the last 10 years Iโ€™ve learned various modalities including: anatomy, posture, neurological and exercise courses, which were then compiled and utilized to create a highly effective assessment, manual release technique, and corrective exercise protocol to address a multitude of musculoskeletal issues.
