Shots don’t have to be scary 💉💙

At Medical Center Pediatrics, we use tools like the Shot Blocker and Buzzy Bee to help make vaccines more comfortable for your child.

These simple pain-control devices work by distracting the nervous system. They gently “confuse” or interrupt pain signals, helping trick the body into feeling less of the poke. It’s safe, effective, and designed to improve your child’s overall experience. We start using them with our littlest patients to prevent the fear of shots from developing!

Less fear. Less discomfort. More brave kiddos. 💪

March is also Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠While there are many types of brain injuries, we want to take a moment to focus on how to recognize concussions and hopefully reduce their occurrence.

Here’s what to watch for if you suspect a concussion ➡️

Please note: Concussion signs and symptoms may not show up right away. Concussion signs can look different depending on the age of your child. If you believe your child has sustained a concussion, please contact your pediatrician's office.

⭐ Meet the Team: Fran ⭐

Many of you may recognize Fran from our front desk at West Bloomfield! 😀 She has been an integral part of our MCP family for 26 years! 🙌

Her favorite part of her job is seeing patients come in and grow up over the years. She especially loves hearing parents talk about their kids!

Outside of the office you can find her spending time with her kids and grandkids and volunteering (ask her about her volunteer work with animals)! 🐕

✈️ Planning international travel? Don’t forget to check your vaccines!

There is currently a Level 2 Travel Advisory (Practice Enhanced Precautions) for polio in several countries worldwide (scroll to see where). Health officials are advising all travelers to make sure they are vaccinated against polio before international travel.

Polio is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily and can lead to nerve damage, paralysis, and in rare cases, death. The good news is that vaccination provides strong protection.

Keeping vaccinations current helps protect your child and communities around the world. 🌍

When you became a parent, you probably didn’t think “one day I’m going to have to teach my child how to blow their nose.” 🤔

However, anyone with little ones knows this skill isn’t hard-wired! 🤧

According to the Academy of Pediatrics, you can teach a child as young as 2 to blow their nose. With kids averaging around six to eight colds a year, teaching them how to blow their nose is an essential life skill.

Since kids love to play, there’s no better way to help skills – like nose blowing – stick than through play! (We find this works best when your child is healthy, rather than waiting until they are sick to practice.)

March is National Nutrition Month! 🍎🥦 It’s the perfect time to build healthy habits that last a lifetime!

Making healthy choices doesn’t have to be hard! We’re cheering on small changes that make a big difference:

🥗 Aim for meals that include a mix of foods from all the major food groups to provide a wide range of nutrients, while keeping highly processed foods to a minimum. Swap soda for water, chips for fruit, and make treats occasional—not everyday.

👨‍👩‍👧 Make family meals a priority: Eating together encourages healthier choices and gives parents a chance to model balanced habits (and stay in tune with what kids are eating!).

👩‍🍳 Get kids involved: Little hands love helping! Let them wash fruits, stir ingredients, or help choose veggies at the store. Kids are more likely to try foods they helped prepare.

Healthy habits start at home, and we’re here to support your family every step of the way. 💙

Dehydration happens when our bodies don't have enough water to work properly. Your child stays hydrated through food and beverages. If they don’t replace the water they lose through activity, heat, or illness (like norovirus), they might start feeling sick.

So, what exactly is the best thing to give your child for dehydration? ➡️ Swipe to find out AND see recommended amounts to give. 💧

February is also Children’s Dental Health Month! Do you know when your little one should first visit the dentist? 🦷 The rule of thumb is this: first tooth, first birthday, first dental visit! 🪥

Once your little one has their first tooth or by the time they turn one year old, you should take them to see a pediatric dentist. This will help get them comfortable being cared for by the dentist as well as check for normal growth and signs of early issues.

⭐ Meet the team: Sharmanique ⭐

Sharmanique is a wonderful Triage nurse in our Bingham Farms office and is about to celebrate her one year anniversary with us! 🙌

She loves the great relationships she’s been able to build with her coworkers here at MCP and that she gets to use her passion for working with children everyday.

Outside of work, Sharmanique spends time with her 3 children (1 girl, 2 boys) and enjoys shopping, traveling, cooking, giving back to our community and throwing drive up baby showers! 🎉
