SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF NATHAN LORD
121rst Reunion
Masonic Hall, South Berwick, Maine August 20, 2022
The 121st meeting of the Sons and Daughters of Nathan Lord was called to order by President Barbara Lord at 1:15 following a delicious meal of lobster and chicken pot pie. Many thanks to Tom Lord for obtaining and cooking the lobsters. Seventeen members were present. Introductions were made by everyone in attendance. Cindy and Bill Abbey of Kingston, Washington came the greatest distance to attend this year’s meeting and were welcomed as new members. The Nesbitts of Springfield, MA were also welcomed as new members. We were so happy to have met them.
Barbara read a note she received from Paul Cunningham. He lives in Virginia and is unable to attend, and sends greetings to all his Lord cousins. The passing of Charles Lord was also recognized.
Jack Lord still owns the plot of land on Lord’s Lane that was bequeathed to the organization. He has not yet obtained an EIN number due to bureaucratic red tape. He has the forms needed to transfer the deed to the organization once the EIN number is obtained. Jack was given ideas from members on how best to proceed with this matter.
The Lord Cemetery is very overgrown, and access to it is difficult. Mike Rounds has spoken to the owner of the property surrounding the cemetery, and read information from 2017 that he had researched. Lisa Daniels suggested that the scouts be contacted to see if they would be willing to clean it up as part of a community service project. Cheryl Higgins owns the property. Mike Rounds, Tom Lord, and Steve Lord will visit the property and work out a plan and report back next year.
Jack and Barbara have genealogical materials in boxes that they keep in their home in Bingham, Maine. These boxes are transported to South Berwick each year for the meeting. Jack is looking for a place in South Berwick to store these materials. The Old Berwick Historical Society was contacted, and they are not interested in receiving these materials. Jack has been given the name of the Head Librarian of the South Berwick Library, and he will follow up with him. Steve Lord has taken a box of loose materials to organize.
Lisa Daniels, Chair of the Historical Committee, is working to retrieve electronic information from Mary Beth Ortzman of New Jersey who passed away. Lisa explained that it is harder to research in paper form than electronically.
The Sons and Daughters of Nathan Lord is now a registered non-profit with the State of Maine. Steve Lord is the Agent, and filed the annual report on April 27, 2022 with the State. The four officers serve as trustees for the limited purpose of receiving or selling property. They did not meet this year.
Jack Lord read the Treasurer’s Report. There is a CD at Citizen’s Bank with a current value of $4789.14. The checking account has $2342.79. Auditors Tom Lord and Lisa Daniels reviewed the financial information and found it to be in order.
Barabara Lord presented the slate of officers for the coming year:
President Barbara Lord
Vice President Tom Lord
Secretary Steve Lord
Treasurer Jack Lord
Historical Committee Lisa Daniels, Tom Lord
Auditors Lisa Daniels, Tom Lord
Lisa Daniels made a motion for the Secretary to cast one ballot for the slate of officers as read. Bill Abbey seconded. The motion passed by a unanimous hand vote.
Lyn and Steve Lord gave information on the First Maine Artillery Unit that made an unsuccessful assault on Confederate lines at the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. Two thirds of the unit was wiped out, and a there is a painting honoring them. Seven Lords from Central Maine served in the Unit, and a list of their names was presented.
Mike Rounds displayed a 1680 map of colonial Maine and New Hampshire. He presented research he had completed on Martha Tozier (wife of Nathan 2 Lord), and the assault which killed her parents during the beginning of King Philip’s War. Martha Tozier is either a grandmother or aunt of all Lord descendants. The research gave specific information about where she was living, her surviving family members, and details of the attack. Many thanks to Mike for his extensive research on this topic.
The next meeting of the Sons and Daughters of Nathan Lord will be on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the Masonic Hall in South Berwick, Maine.
Respectfully submitted,
Steve Lord
Secretary
