🚨 The nursing home funding crisis in New York State is REAL and it’s impacting families right here in the Southern Tier.

Good Shepherd Communities recently hosted a press conference to bring attention to the growing crisis facing nursing homes. Chronic underfunding is threatening access to care for older adults, forcing some families to send loved ones 50–100 miles away for the care they need.

We are grateful to Senator Lea Webb, Donna Lupardo, and LeadingAge New York for standing with us and advocating for meaningful change. Their leadership helps amplify the urgent need to fully fund nursing home care and protect access for seniors across our region.

Thank you as well to our incredible staff, residents, and community members who continue to raise their voices and support this important cause. Together, we must protect nursing home capacity, support caregivers, and ensure seniors can age with dignity close to home.

Thank you, Senator Lea Webb, for advocating for our residents and residents throughout Broome County to protect nursing home capacity, support caregivers, and ensure seniors can age with dignity.

I joined Good Shepherd, LeadingAge New York, families, and caregivers to highlight the urgent need to invest in nursing home care in Broome County. Chronic underfunding puts local facilities at risk, and when beds close, families face longer distances for care, hospitals experience discharge delays, and our community’s healthcare system feels the strain. I will continue fighting in Albany to protect nursing home capacity, support our caregivers, and ensure seniors can age with dignity.

We were honored to welcome the Binghamton University Kung Fu Club as they helped us celebrate the Lunar New Year! 🧧🐉

Residents were delighted by a vibrant lion dance performance. The traditional costume features two performers, one controlling the head and the other the tail, working together to mimic the lion’s movements. The dance is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and ward off evil spirits.

Beyond the excitement and color, the lion dance holds deep cultural significance in Chinese tradition. It symbolizes strength, wisdom, and unity, and is often performed during Lunar New Year and other important celebrations to honor heritage, invite positive energy, and bring communities together across generations.

📍 Advocacy Day at the New York State Capitol

On February 3rd, members of the Good Shepherd Communities leadership team were in Albany advocating for not-for-profit providers of long-term care across New York State.

Representing Good Shepherd were Jason Santiago (CEO), Mary Wassel (COO), Ariel Smith (Executive Director of Fairview Home), Patti Hitchcock (Executive Director of Chase Memorial), and Peter Lennon (Member of the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd Communities).

Throughout the day, our team engaged in meaningful conversations with state leaders about the issues that matter most to the people we serve — including adequate funding, fair reimbursement, capital funding needs, and key assisted living priorities.

Advocacy is a core part of our mission. Showing up, speaking out, and ensuring the voices of not-for-profit providers, residents, and staff are heard is how we help strengthen and sustain long-term care in our communities.
