VA Golden Age Games began in 1985, long before “senior athletics” was a mainstream idea. VA recognized that aging Veterans needed more than medical care. They also needed motivation, goals, and a sense of connection. So, the Games were born with just a few hundred competitors.
Today, they’ve grown into a major event where thousands of athletes and supporters from across the country come to take part. It is a living tribute to the fact that service continues after age 50 and that strength can last a lifetime.

The Veterans Health Administration is marking 80 years of supporting Veterans of all ages and abilities just like the Golden Age Game athletes. Learn more.

National Drug Take Back Day – April 24 & 25, 2026
Safely dispose of unused medications and help save lives.
Your Birmingham VA Health Care System is proud to support the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25.
We encourage all Veterans and employees to take a few moments to remove any unused or expired medications from their homes. This small, proactive step can make a big difference—helping prevent prescription misuse, accidental ingestion, and potential overdose for yourself and others in your household.
Together, we can reduce the risk of overdose and overdose deaths by safely disposing of medications through our Medication Take Back Boxes located at:

• Birmingham VA Medical Center (Emergency Department)
700 19th St. S., Birmingham
Friday & Saturday | 24/7
• Birmingham VA Clinic (Entrance)
2415 7th Ave. S., Birmingham
Friday | 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
• Huntsville VA Clinic (Entrance)
500 Markaview Road NW., Huntsville
Friday | 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

No questions asked. No appointments needed. Just a safe and secure way to protect our Veterans, families, and communities.
Let’s take action together. Dispose responsibly. Save lives.

Join us in celebrating National Volunteer Week from April 19-25! Volunteers provide tremendous support to Veterans and staff — and they do so selflessly. If you see a volunteer around campus, take a moment to say, “Thank you.” After all, volunteers make VA possible. You've seen our Red Coat Ambassadors across campus — guiding Veterans, staffing information desks, and helping patients navigate care every day.
This year marks 80 years of voluntary service at VA, a program managed by the Center for Development and Civic Engagement. For 80 years, volunteers have continued to make a profound impact in the lives of Veterans and staff.
