Last week’s Collective event at the Samford Wellness Kitchen was a huge success! 👩‍🍳🥕

Fourteen students worked together in small groups to prepare a healthy meal from start to finish. Along the way, they practiced important independent living skills like cutting and baking vegetables, using the Instant Pot, and preparing a no-bake dessert.

With guidance from the experts at Samford, students learned new cooking techniques, built confidence in the kitchen, and enjoyed working as a team. Most importantly, everyone had a great time sharing a meal they created together!

Thank you to the Samford Wellness Kitchen for hosting us and helping our students build skills that support independence both in the kitchen and beyond.

Exciting news from our therapy team!

One of our physical therapists recently completed Level 1 Certification in Non-Invasive Spinal Electrical (NISE) Stimulation.

NISE is an innovative therapy designed to support children with diagnoses such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hypotonia, and spinal cord injuries. This approach can help improve strength, coordination, circulation, body awareness, and functional outcomes.

We’re excited to begin incorporating NISE into our therapy services and look forward to the positive impact it can have for the children and families we serve! 💙

We love seeing the impact of Emmett’s Toy Takeover in action!

When Capri Parks, a sophomore at Hoover High School, attended Emmett’s Toy Takeover hosted by United Ability and Accessing Potential Through Assistive Technology in November, she learned how to adapt toys to make them switch-accessible. But she didn’t stop there.

Inspired to give back, Capri used her new skills (and the support of generous donors) to adapt 12 toys for children with limited mobility and donate them to special education classrooms at Linda Nolen Learning Center, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Deer Valley Elementary School, and Berry Middle School.

“This process brought me so much joy. I hope it brings the kids the same,” Capri shared.

Her initiative, compassion, and commitment to making play accessible for all embody the very heart of Emmett’s Toy Takeover. She didn’t just learn a skill; she used it to create meaningful change in her community.

Capri, we are so grateful for you, and we can’t wait to see what you do next. 💫

Last week, adults from United Ability’s Dr. E’s Place joined Sarah Sanders, SLP, Alyssa Scharf, SLP, and Hank Poore to present “Conversations with Lifelong AAC Users: A Panel” at the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama 2026 Convention.

The panel focused on supporting adolescent and adult AAC users, highlighting the shift from school-based therapy to vocational, advocacy, and community-based communication. The adult panelists, many of whom received their devices in adulthood, shared their lived experiences and emphasized the importance of speech therapy across the lifespan.

We’re so proud of them for leading the conversation!

We are honored and grateful to be selected as the charity partner for the 2025 Alabama Cup, sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA)!

Proceeds from this event will directly support United Ability’s programs and the children and adults we serve across our community. We are deeply thankful to the AJGA and everyone involved in the Alabama Cup for choosing United Ability as this year’s beneficiary and for turning a day on the course into meaningful impact beyond it.

Thank you for believing in our work and standing alongside the people we serve!

Today, members of the United Ability community traveled to the Alabama State Capitol for Disability Advocacy Day, a powerful reminder that every voice matters.

Participants and staff connected with lawmakers, shared their lived experiences, and spoke up about the issues and policies that impact people with disabilities across our state.

We’re proud to support and amplify their voices as we work together to ensure decisions made under the dome reflect the needs, rights, and potential of people of all abilities.

Join us for a delicious way to give back!

On Thursday, February 26 from 5–8 PM, place a mobile order through the Chick-fil-A® app at Chick-fil-A - Hoover Commons and select the “Support” toggle at checkout to benefit United Ability.

Every mobile order placed during Spirit Night helps support our mission of empowering children and adults with disabilities in our community. It’s an easy (and tasty) way to make a difference. Mark your calendar, place your order, and help us spread the word! 🐔

Meet Alyssa, a dedicated Girl Scout and graduate of United Ability’s Hand In Hand Early Learning Program, who receives outpatient speech therapy at the Ability Clinic.

Alyssa is 18 years old and has been a Girl Scout for 11 years. A top 5 cookie seller on her council for the last 6 years, Alyssa has previously won the Girl Scout Cookie Pro Competition, earned a trip to Los Angeles through her cookie sales, and engaged in meaningful experiences with her troop that have empowered her to build her confidence and communication skills. Alyssa also sells cookies at Hand In Hand each year as part of her speech therapy and is always quick to tell her customers that the Samoas are her favorite.

Currently working toward receiving her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, Alyssa is using her voice to advocate for expanded access to Girl Scouts programming for girls with disabilities. Way to go, Alyssa!
