Chandrekha is a 36-year-old married woman who lives in the Kolkata slums where the ConneXions project is located. Poverty left her feeling hopeless. Her children were unable to attend school due to the family's financial constraints, which prevented them from being able to pay for school supplies, transportation, and other necessities. Chandrekha is unable to work anywhere else because she is not academically educated, and her conservative family does not allow her to work outside the home. Her husband is also unable to work due to health issues, so ConneXions offered her a skills training program.
Through the program, she learned how to stitch blankets, and we paid her for each one she finished. She uses this income to support her family. Her family life has improved because she can send her children to school and hire tutors. Her children are pursuing college, and she supports them in this endeavor.
ConneXions works through the WorldCrafts mission, which allows us to positively impact the lives of people in slum communities.
